Studies about Soy and Black Cohosh - INFORMATION ONLY DO NOT REPLY
If you poke up this thread there's a couple of studies about endo and soy. They seem to point to a little soy as being good and a lot of soy as being bad for endo. So, eating some soy products is probably good--tofu, for instance--because of the hints at positive effects on blood pressure and bones. But I wouldn't eat a lot of soy products and definitely wouldn't take the pills or boosted products that brag about extra phytoestrogens.
It's sooooo confusing. :hair:

No HRT for 1 year I'm drying up!
Hi,
I had a TAH Jan02. Nothing left in! My doctor and myself opted not to do hrt. I didn't feel comfotable taking it for fear of weight gain and mood swings etc.. ( I have weight problam already)
I started losing a lot of hair about 6 months post-op and my skin started to dry.
I started taking black cohosh (remifemin) about 3 months ago, also evening prim and calcium and it has helped greatly with hot flashes. I feel pretty good but..
the hair is not coming out as much however the texture has changed greatly( it went from super curly to half straight and is dry like a bone as is my skin) I lotion up like crazy and condition and nothing has helped. I look older because my skin is so dry.
( I'm 43)
Does anybody have any suggestions for further treatment of these symptoms. I also need an energy boost!
Thanks Chefboo

soy stuff
I have found a few ways to have a little soy. I make my own ww bread and put about a third of a soy dog in into some of it like little weiner wraps. I use a little mustard for dipping and it is really quite good. I also make a home made chili, where I use TVP in place of the meat and a few soy beans mixed into the other beans. I also put a can of pork and beans into a small crock pot with a squeese of mustard and ketchup, 1 tbl brn sugar and 2 soy dogs sliced thinly and cook it for about 2 hours, it is really good!! I also put a little soy flour into the four and seasonings I dip chicken into and a little into cookie and bread recipes, I experiment alot. It doesn't have to be allot, it adds up over time. I even think soy baby formula tastes better than the soy milk does. again even if you dredge your chicken in soy milk before you cook , fry or broil it will add to your total. Also there is a phytoestrogen cream made by emertia, I have been using, I figure if it doesn't help, at least I have soft supple skin. I have been working at this for a long time. Now if I only could remember to swallow those hug calcium pills 3 times a day I would be set.

Hi Imalith
I think we're in the same situation. I had laser lap surgery less than a year ago and most of the pain and inflammation is baaaack... I'm looking at doing a TAH w/ovaries and everything removed, then no HRT for 3 months to starve the cells of estrogen. Did yours come back even after you had major surgery? My doctor did say that this would certainly help but that chronic pain was another issue altogether. We meet again March 11, she wants to make sure my husband understands the permanence of this decision, so she's very conscientious. Thanks for your post, just can't wait to have it all yanked out!!!

Studies about Soy and Black Cohosh - INFORMATION ONLY DO NOT REPLY
This is all so confusing** to soy or not to soy**, that is my question??? I bought Supplifem thinking that I might need the supplement while my one remaining ovary tries to recoup Sounds like if I am reading correctly- that that is probably not the best mode of getting soy?? Seems like we start to think we are doing something good for ourselves only to find out there could still be possible problems :hair:
I am not going to start taking it if at all, until I see my DR next week. I also purchased black cohosh and Vit B complex, I think maybe I will go ahead and start with these and see how it works out.
((Trish)) thanks for all the information, I just want to get healthy again whatever it takes. I know being informed is my best step toward that I appreciate all the information you have put out here.
Thanks,
DLK

Black Cohosh
I started taking Remifemin, which contains black cohosh, in February, in advance of having a total hysterectomy ( w/removal of ovaries). I cannot take HRT or soy because of breast cancer (ER+/PR+). I will have the hysterectomy on April 30th and am looking forward to getting everything that has caused me nothing but problems removed. It will be interesting to see if the Remifemin works after the surgery. I got my oncologist's permission to take Remifemin. I will post later as to its success.

Studies about Soy and Black Cohosh - INFORMATION ONLY DO NOT REPLY
I just went off of hormones, am having hot flashes +, and am looking into what else I can do, so that when i speak with my MD next Fri - I can be well educated and participate in decisions about what I need to do - also to convince him of what I want if need be - I am allergic to soy- and although my tumor was benign, I have a hx of breast CA in my immedite family - you mentioned remufemin - and black cohosh - does black cohosh also come all by itself - I hope to have a game plan by Mon, ater all of my research, and reading here - tomorrow am I am having my first cup of green tea - stay tuned...

Black Cohosh
Soy is not listed as an ingredient in Remifemin. It is also estrogen free. In a medical study, black cohosh was the only thing found to be effective against symptoms of menopause.

Studies about Soy and Black Cohosh - INFORMATION ONLY DO NOT REPLY
One concern I have ladies about supplements is their safeness, has anyone seen a study on the safeness of black cohosh? I understand it is not FDA approved as with many supplements out there. (pls correct me if I'm wrong here)
I have read info from a nutritionalist that said it had been related to liver issues-it may elevate liver enzymes? GI issues, weight gain and dizziness were some other complaints she listed. Again, her opinion and research I haven't found a study on it myself other than Trish's.
Again, I am not saying to try or not to try it but wanted to know if someone else has found any more info on it?
After I complete my research on these I am going to relate the info to my DR. I would make this suggestion to any lady trying supplements, etc- remember some supplements can actually interfere with presciption drugs and might not be well suited for you due to medical history( i.e. breast cancer dx/hx).
I have started Vit B complex and like ((imalith)) stated I can tell a real difference when I forget to take it- fatigue, etc.
Thanks for all the input ladies, I look forward to finding out more about these supplements and making an educated decision for myself.
s,
lenee
BTW: I am still sitting on the fence, and hoping the only ovary I kept will kick in for now so I have a couple of more years til menopause to decide! I am hoping that the FDA will start regulating some of this supplement stuff too, that might be wishful thinking on my part and it totally doesn't make it necessarily safe for me but it would be the first step in making a good decision.
