considering hyst for bad pap??

I have a strange situation and badly need advice! In March had LEEP for a moderate-severe dysplasia. After 2 follow-ups have had some abnormal cells but no dysplasia. Dr not concerned but wants follow-up in 3 months. HOWEVER, I'm worried because I have a HUGE insurance change in January. If I have a bad pap he said he will do a hyst but I probably won't be able to afford it w/ the new insurance. His nurse suggests I discuss the pretty bad pain I have with my periods and perhaps he will go ahead and consider a hyst before the end of the year because of my situation and my HIGH ANXIETY about the paps. Anyone out there think I should proceed as she suggests?

Thanks!!

Sorry--forgot to mention that Dr thinks abnormal cells are just caused from healing of LEEp but that was 6 months ago. Could this be?

Hi, Beach chick! Sorry that you are having these worries right now. Abnormal PAP's can cause any woman to be anxious--it's normal.

Keep in mind that the statistics show that 80-90% of women with dysplasia are considered cured after an intervention with LEEP or cone. That's pretty good odds. Generally speaking, healing from such a procedure is considered to be essentially complete within 4 months, but that doesn't mean that you wouldn't still have some atypical cells for a longer period than that. The physical findings (exam) have to be taken into account along with the pathology report for the doctor to determine what s/he thinks is the cause of the abnormal cells or atypical cells. Women frequently go through several procedures before settling on a hysterectomy when dealing with dysplasia. A hysterectomy is major surgery, and while sometimes it can't be avoided, it still should be a treatment of last resort. However, you should always have open conversations with your doctor about all of your symptoms and all of your concerns, because you and your medical team are the only ones who can determine the best course of action for you.

That being said, try to do all you can to facilitate your body's natural healing responses. Eat well. Take a multivitamin (folic acid is believed to help us fight off these abnormal cells). Get plenty of rest. Exercise moderately. Pray/meditate/do yoga. All of these things are believed to improve the body's immune function which ultimately leads to a healthier you!

Please let us know what you decide to do! Good luck!
