Dr's office called and set the date yesterday...
November 16th, pre op November 9th. Needless to say, I'm terrified, worried if I'm making the right choice, and regretting my decision to host Thanksgiving at my house with all of my family and my husband's HUGE family! What was I thinking?! I mean, I spoke with my midwife and my dr and they both think this is the best thing but am I over exaggerating my need for a dvh? I have heavy bleeding and severe cramps, they found a fibroid and that's it. Does that justify having my uterus removed? I see everyone else's posts that have actual diseases and endo and I wonder if I'm just being a baby. Has anyone else had their uterus removed only because of horrible bleeding and cramps and fibroids?

Re: Dr's office called and set the date yesterday...
Horrible bleeding, cramps, & fibroids are a valid reason for a hyst. They totally disrupt quality of life. The bleeding can cause anemia, which could be serious business.
I had my hyst 6 weeks ago, as of yesterday. I already am glad I did it. My bleeding wasn't that heavy, but had its moments, & I bled 3 out of 4 weeks. I also started having migraines.
As for Thanksgiving, order dinner from Wal-mart, or somewhere. Let everyone bring extra side dishes or desserts, & let them fend for themselves, or move dinner to someone else house. Under the circumstances, they should understand. If you have it at your house, use paper plates & glasses. Let DH handle the trash. Just let everyone know you are required to rest & heal. Let them serve you. Making arrangements will be a good way to pass the time before surgrey. If you insist on cooking anything, cook it now, then freeze it & let someone else deal with it when it is time.

Re: Dr's office called and set the date yesterday...
thank you for that wonderful advice and support!! I do in fact think it will be too much to host it at my house, I'm gonna speak to my husband tonight about moving to someone else's place. Another question I have is how much down time am I looking at here? I have 4 small ones at home and my husband doesn't want to take more than 2 dsys off work. How long till I'm able to do my normal stuff? I don't work outside of the home but will I need to bring someone to my house to help out? Thanks again for the support.

Re: Dr's office called and set the date yesterday...
I have been suffering with heavy bleeding, cysts on my ovaries and huge fibroids for over 10 years. I am so glad my doctor finally called today to set my date on 12/02/10. I can't wait. I am so looking forward to not bleeding 3 out of 4 weeks a month and actually having a life with my husband. I would move thanksgiving somewhere else this year or make it a potluck. You have one time to heal DO IT RIGHT!

Re: Dr's office called and set the date yesterday...
I understand cjwagg. It does sound like we are in the same boat. I too have heavy bleeding during my period. I have a 5cm submucosal fibroid. My periods also last anywhere from 7-10 days. I'm anemic for the bleeding. The heavy periods have gone on for 2+ years and I'm sick of it. The way I look at it is like this. I'm done having children. I got my tubes tied almost 13 years ago. I'm at least 15 years away from going through menopause. The fibroid is more than likely going to get bigger and the periods heavier. Why put up with it? You have to do what's best for you though. Pray hard and put it in God's hands.

Re: Dr's office called and set the date yesterday...
I agree with Drafter29 comments as I too had those symptoms of heavy bleeding, anemia and a massive fibroid. For me, it was the right decision. I am in week 2 of my recovery and so far so good. Just taking it slow and easy. But you have to make the right decision for you when it comes to surgery. No one can tell you to do it or not do it.
Best wishes.

Re: Dr's office called and set the date yesterday...
Sweetie, these are all valid reasons!!! Seriously if it affects your quality of life you are NOT being a BABY!!!
When I did my research three years ago (I ended up having a myo then), I was thinking the same like you, along the lines of "I am not sick enough, compared to all those gals with endo and such..."....especially on good days...and then on the cramping days I would think "anything, I'd do anything to make this go away...."
Screw those "I am not worth it" thoughts!!!! If it affects you, it is worth considering.
Regarding thanksgiving, you have received some good advise already and it sounds like you are considering to move it to another place. Do whatever feels right.
I was originally scheduled on 19th Oct, so I announced we would have a big Halloween Party at our house, so I'd be motivated to recover until then. Then they moved my surgery to 26th, so I canceled the party.
On Sunday I felt good enough and almost regretted canceling it, but I know, that had I known about the party, I would have started stressing and cleaning and shopping a day before the party and at that time I was definitely not ready.
So hubby and I had take out Chinese and I sat there in my robe with my witch hat on and with the candy bowl in my hands (less than 10 pds at a time), waiting for the kids to trick or treat.
Worked totally fine for me!!
Anybody should understand about the change of plans! You will be having major surgery, hun!!

Re: Dr's office called and set the date yesterday...
Plan to spend most of your time in bed or on the couch the first week, & gradually getting up & around. If you are a fast healer with no complications, the first 2 weeks are mostly homebound. No lifting anything more than a gallon of milk for the first 6 weeks, or close to it. It seems like forever, but well worth planning the time to rest & heal.
I think I'm ahead of average on getting back into things, & didn't drive for first 10 days. Back to work at 2 weeks with a desk job. If at all possible, have someone come stay with you for the first few days, especially with kids. If kids are in school, you will mostly need someone to come in & check on you for lunch & to help with them after they get out of school, till DH gets home. Main thing is to have the help on standby, & if it happens that you don't need it, all the better.
Oh yeah, keep Christmas shopping to internet or small stores. You won't want to deal with Malls or Wal-mart after Thanksgiving.

Re: Dr's office called and set the date yesterday...
I wondered exactly the same thing you wondered. I didn't have cramping necessarily just a LOT of low back pain...periods that were ridiculous and they found a fibroid on the ultrasound along with a uterus the size of a 13 week pregnant uterus. When they went in to do the LAVH they found a fibroid on the back that they didn't see on the ultrasounds the size of a baseball. Enough said! I made the right choice. It has only been three weeks and a couple days and already I am glad I did it. Recovery is going well...more tired than usual some pain etc...but I am so thankful I am done with periods. No more worries that I will flood and leak at work, no more spending MONTHS bleeding...and no more worrying about pads and tampons and messing up sheets during vacations etc....

Re: Dr's office called and set the date yesterday...
cjwagg: I'm also scheduled for LAVH, one day before you -- and "all" I have is fibroids, too. I had my preop today, and my doctor said (in essence) "It ain't gonna get better on its own." I've been telling myself, "yeah, I can handle this," for YEARS now, but after seeing my doctor (and reading some of the accounts on this forum), I know that if left untreated, it can and probably will get worse, in all kinds of really horrible and unmanageable ways -- yes, with "just" fibroids, you bet. I'm choosing health and quality of life.
