4 months post-hysterectomy, lower back, rectal and leg pain esp after sex

Hello! My name is Sofia and I'm glad to be a part of this group.
I had my total hys end of Dec. 2 days after surgery, I ended up getting an Ileus and a hematoma and that landed me in the hospital for 2 weeks. The surgery was robotic and the doctor was shocked to see the complications. Anyway, my ENDO was really bad before the surgery so we assumed it would be a slower recovery. I'm now into my 4th month and I have been experiencing lower abdominal, lower back, rectal and leg pain. It's almost like the ENDO pain I used to experience. The pain is made worse by sex. This FREAKS me out. I have asked my doctor multiple times and she says that it may just take me longer to feel better.

I'm frustrated. I thought I would be so much better and happier after surgery but I feel the same. Has anyone else experienced this?

Love to all,

Re: 4mths post OP

Sofia, so glad you posted. Let me see if I can help with some personal experience being farther down the road from surgery. First, remember that a Hysterectomy is major surgery and then tack on your additional complications that left you in the hospital for weeks. Your doctor is right it might just be that your body needs more time to heal from the trauma. Even at 4 months when you feel like you might be back to “normal” life in many ways, your body is still doing some fine tune healing and it could be up to a year to be truly 100%.

I know that personally I was shocked that at 4-6 months I could still have major fatigue and if I had a really busy day, I might even end it with aches and inflammation. I see in hindsight It just took more time. It was not easy for an impatient active person like me to wait longer. But so worth it as I live a better quality of life without daily pain.

Wondering if some of your “endo” pain is at the sites that your endo was removed? Regarding you comment on pain during sex. I had pain with sex before surgery due to my Endo/Adeno. Returning to sex also took time for me, as I was expecting the same pain as before. Again, sorry to say but “with more time” that too improved. My advice if you are not is to use lots of lubrication and also try different positions to see if you have more control over level of pain.

Hope this has helped, I wish you all the best in your healing

Re: 4mths post-hysterectomy, lower back, rectal and leg pain esp after sex

I've moved your post from Endometriosis Support to our Post-Op / Recovery Forum. It's hard to say whether your current pains are from a recurrence of endo already or whether it's taking longer for you to heal, for whatever reason. I think you might get more support here. I have heard from some Sisters with endo that it was slower going for them, and I'm hoping some will come alongside and offer their insight.

Sex wasn't 100% enjoyable at first for me either, and the first few times it was from vaginal dryness. I kept my ovaries, but they weren't back up to full throttle yet. I agree with lubrication helping on that. Don't underestimate what more foreplay, outer stimulation and setting the atmosphere can do to help make it easier. Have realistic expectations that it might not be the way it was for these first few times. Consider being on top - it gives you more control, you don't have to worry about his weight on you. What's most important is talking to your partner and being on the same page. Just like many other things about this recovery, even sex takes time to get back on track. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'll also share that my surgery was textbook, no endo, no complications, but I would still get pains whenever I did more than my body was ready to handle. Last time I experienced post-op pains was at 5 months after surgery, and for some these go on longer.

If your pain continues, or gets worse, you may want to push for answers, even if it means switching doctors. Too, perhaps pelvic floor therapy would help - we've had Sisters who've pursued this and found relief.
