When to start HRT

I am 3 weeks post-op and have 2-3 hot flashes at night, when I wake up to use the restroom. I have not had any other symptoms, and no hot flashes other than the few times at night. I plan on talking with my gyn/Oncologist at my 6 week post-op appt, but would love to know when you started HRT and if I should worry about more symptoms developing.

Re: When to start HRT

I started on hormone therapy the day after my surgery. Of course not everyone starts out on it right away and some elect not to use it at all. There are things to factor into your decision such as your age, if there are medical reasons you can't/shouldn't use it, etc.

No one can say if you will develop additional symptoms or not. In the early weeks of recovery your body is depleting the hormones your ovaries made, so it's certainly possible that as they deplete and then are gone, you will have more symptoms. You might find it helpful to keep a journal of any symptoms that you do have so that you can share that information with your doctor.

If you want to get an idea of what options are available for dealing with surgical menopause, have a look at the Menopause and Hormones - Articles resource. Having that information ahead of time can help make for a more productive conversation with the doctor.

Re: When to start HRT

You're very welcome!

Just for clarification, a radical hysterectomy is usually performed where cervical cancer is diagnosed. This invasive procedure also removes the parametrium, pelvic lymph nodes and the upper part of the vagina, as well as the uterus and cervix. The ovaries and tubes may or may not be removed.
