Turning 32 and hysterectomy scheduled on 12/2! Am so nervous about the potential risks for premenopause
Hello! I know people have different experiences, but I thought I'd share mine if it helps. I had a total hysterectomy 5yrs ago at 36. I had a melon-sized fibroid in my uterus. I was fearful up until the morning of surgery when I eventually felt a certain comfort. The surgery went fine. It was a painful recovery, but to be expected. It was painful to sit up, walk around, sit for the first few weeks as I healed. One thing that I struggled to strengthen was my core. When I got the OK for this type of exercise, I started doing planks to help. Anywho, 5yrs later and no perimenopause. I feel like I felt before the hysterectomy. Well, before the fibroids. I haven't had any night sweats or any dryness. No noticeable perimenopause symptoms this far along. Hope this information helps. Praying all goes well and you have a speedy recovery!

Re: Turning 32 and hysterectomy scheduled on 12/2! Am so nervous about the potential risks for premenopause
Welcome! I had mine at 42 due to a failed ablation and scarring. Best thing ever! I don’t miss my periods at ALL.
Like everyone has said, a lot of the fear is in the unknown. My ovaries kicked back in after a few months and I still have monthly mood swings, sore breasts, etc. I had my hormones tested a few months ago and all is fine.
If it wasn’t fine I’d just supplement. There are a lot of options for that nowadays.
Enjoy life without watching the calendar and always staying stocked up on supplies! It’s glorious!

I think there is no way to know how your body will react to surgery. It also depends on your anatomy and if your ovaries are dependent on blood supply from your uterus. We knew ahead of time one my ovaries did receive some blood flow from the uterine artery and would lose that supply. We couldn’t know if the ovary would fail or if it would compensate and be fine.
My surgery was over 6 months ago. I am 43, but the women in my family have late menopause and I wasn’t even in peri menopause yet. I worried just as much as you are currently! For me, my ovaries didn’t even miss a beat. I never had any menopausal symptoms after surgery. Obviously I’m only 6 months out and I can’t know the long term impact, but so far so good.
I am glad I had the surgery. Everything went really well and my recovery was no big deal. I feel so much better post surgery!

Turning 32 and hysterectomy scheduled on 12/2! Am so nervous about the potential risks for premenopause
I had the same procedure two years ago at age 33. I haven’t experienced any premenopausal symptoms. I too had fibroids and had done other procedures to remove them but new ones always came back.
I’m so happy I had the hysterectomy. I was really apprehensive going in to it, but I’ve never felt better. No more bloating, unexpected bleeding, or discomfort. I take 100mg of progesterone nightly, it helps balance my hormones overall and I feel more like myself. Every once in a while I’ll get some mild night sweats but that’s it. My doctor has tried to get me to take some low dose estrogen but I don’t like the effects it has on me so I don’t take it. I do have an extremely light period-ish day once per month.
Best of luck!

Turning 32 and hysterectomy scheduled on 12/2! Am so nervous about the potential risks for premenopause
Welcome!
I had a total (meaning ovaries, cervix and uterus) and not a partial like you are hopefully having, at age 38. The recovery healing was hard because I was cut hip to hip due to a large ovarian cyst. After that I had to get estrogen back in my body and ended up giving myself a shot every three weeks. Hopefully your hormone levels will not be affected on a level in which you have to rely on hormones😊

I'm mostly worried about the risks for premenopause. I have had a difficult time with fibroids and already had an abdominal myomectomy to have them removed five years ago. My amazing doctor says if I want to try for kids I should do another myomectomy and see, but if I'm sure I don't want children (I'm sure) I should go through with the hysterectomy before more complications arise.
My fibroids are already affecting my bladder, my sex life, and my daily comfort (I have pain and discharge everyday that requires me to wear a pad or tampon). I also am at risk for cervical cancer.
I feel like getting the hysterectomy will only improve my quality of life (and either way, i will need some kind of abdominal surgery this year, they are too big), but there are so many scary stories on here, and even though I'll keep my ovaries, what if I become premenopausal? The abdominal myomectomy five years ago was honestly no sweat, but this time am feeling nervous and unsure about the future, even though I know I want my uterus out.
Would love some words of encouragement or advice from anyone who has been through something similar at my age! This seems like such an amazing community, so glad that everyone going through this bs has been able to come here for support.

Hello I’m 38 and had a total hysterectomy with keeping my ovaries in. My dr assured me that keeping my ovaries wouldn’t cause be to have menopause. I am a month post op and i am feeling fine. Only thing I’m experiencing is still having numbness. Good luck with your surgery

I am so glad you found this site.
I had my hysterectomy and my ovaries removed when I was 43.
My experience is different than yours will be.
If your ovaries are healthy you probably won't go into premenopause. Sometimes your ovaries might not work as well for a short while after the surgery. But your doctor could give you HRT if that happens.
I wish you all the best on your upcoming surgery.

Re: Turning 32 and hysterectomy scheduled on 12/2! Am so nervous about the potential risks for premenopause
Hi Tasu! My heart goes out to you also & truly understand how scary it is, as this was the same thing I was worried about. Since I already suffered from depression/anxiety, I was concerned the change in hormones would make that worse. I had a laparoscopic hysterectomy (uterus only) back in Feb at 41 and am delighted to say that with the exception of 2 weeks of hormonal turbulence around 7mos (was like having an awful period emotions-wise and definite soreness but bearable)- now 9mos later seems to have evened out and feeling great! You're going to feel so much better- just make SURE no matter what, that you nourish your body's health as much as humanly possible before & after surgery:
> NO processed foods
> NIX sugar (powdered stevia or honey instead), gluten & alcohol
> Take a quality daily multivitamin & fish oil
> Eat lots of pineapple (bromelain repairs tissue) and aloe juice (detox + tissue repair)
> VERY important to gently, gradually do light exercise when doc permits
> HEAPS of rest & fresh clean air
Please let us hystersisters know how you go! Will be praying for your speedy recovery xo

Turning 32 and hysterectomy scheduled on 12/2! Am so nervous about the potential risks for premenopause
Hello,
I'm so sorry you're feeling scared and nervous about your upcoming surgery. It's a big decision to make since it's a major procedure that can impact your life greatly. I'm glad you've found this forum. There are so many helpful people here.
I wanted to share my story because of the similarities with yours. I'm 33 now and I had my surgery just over a year ago when I was 32. I had a laproscopic abdominal total hysterectomy (uterus and cervix removed), as well as my phylopian tubes. I had the surgery after dealing with fibriods for nearly 10 years.
Five years before my surgery I had a myomectomy to remove 8 fibroids from within my uterus. They quickly grew back.
What ultimately led to my decision to have the surgery was the noticable decline in my overall health with prolonged anemia from heavy periods. At the time I didn't realize the pain I was in since I'd been living with it for so long.
Before having my hysterectomy, my surgeon required I have a uterine embolization to reduce the potential for blood loss during surgery. It was at this point that my ovaries lost their blood supply. I was worried about their recovery, but consulting with my original surgeon (myomectomy) and the one planning to do my hysterectomy, they assured me that my ovaries were very healthy and would get 'back to work' during my recovery.
I'm feeling quite well now, but recovery was tough and being so anemic beforehand didn't help. I have energy like I've never had before. I did experience some dryness afterwards, but never felt the need for anything beyond some lubricant and all is normal now.
Wishing you peace in your decision, and wellness with whatever you choose.
