What's worked well for me: Pre-Op to Day 8

Following a 12-23 full Hysterectomy using DaVinci robotics, here are a few things that have worked well for me:

Pre-op, watch a YouTube video of the operation. It is hard to do, and you may lose a night of sleep, but actually I slept better for knowing exactly what was going to happen. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the aggressiveness of the surgery, the technology that I am benefiting from, the skills of my surgeon, the importance of teamwork in the operation (ask who your surgeon's partner will be, and how long have they worked together) and for my body and the need for recovery time to heal after such an intrusion.
Pre-Op, Stock up on tea, cookies, coffee for post-op your visitors, and lay away some nutritious recovery food in the freezer, like bone broth, or rally a few friends to do that for you.
Post-Op - Get your meds, gather your peeps, and get out of the hospital as soon as you are clear-headed and comfortable. Hospitals are depressing. But be sure you have your meds figured out and feel stable (you will feel vulnerable, like a cracked egg) and have lots of home support lined up before you go.
Go home and go to bed. LET EVERYTHING GO, including any emotional drama that may be going on or tugging at you. You have more important things to do.
First 24 hours are rough, not for pain but because you're in a fog. Let everyone do everything for you. Do not trust your balance, have someone walk with you.
2nd 24 hours are rough, because your body is trying to re-adjust. Bowels and urinary are the worst part. Everything inside is crampy, gassy, tender, and wiggly. The outside looks like I lost a sword-fight. Belly swelling is mostly at the lower incisions and resolving a little each day.
AVOID constipation if you can (impossible mission). Prunes, and Magnesium pills helped.
Constipation is the #1 reason to get off the oxycodone or percoset asap. I was able to go to X-Strength Tylenol every 6 hrs by day 4 and constipation resolved soon after.
Day 5 or 6, invite friends over to clean your house and change your sheets and run your load of dirty pj's. It is renewing and will prevent you from attempting any of that. Sitting and looking at the growing mess is sore temptation, so be pre-emptive and ask for this help.
Day 8 today, and I'm walking around the block a couple times each day but staying pretty inactive otherwise and moving gently and slowly. Still experiencing gas pains and bowel discomfort, but so far it never lasts more than 30 min or so.
My abdomen sports a constellation of scars including past abdominal incisions, but it's FLAT again -- unreal!!-- (my uterus weighed 1.75 lbs, it was a monster) - and I am hugely relieved and grateful.
So far, so good.
