Hashimoto (auto immune thyroid disease) ??

My GP sent me to finally get set up with a thyroid doctor, and today was my appt. Things did not go as I expected at all. Since my hyperthyroid has been normal last two draws I figured today would just be a simple draw of blood and feel on my neck and send me on my way. Well, she found a nodule, took me back for an U/S and confirmed a nodule, but also found that I have auto immune thyroid disease. She took 3 biopsies through my neck (let me tell you, I finally found a biopsy more painful than cervical or uterine!) to send off for cancer testing. Blood work to test for antibodies etc. I more than likely have Hashimoto's Disease. Now I am concerned what affect this may have on my upcoming surgery? My results should be back Mon or Tues. I'll die if I get cancelled or postponed over this.
Really not happy about another thing to deal with, but this diagnosis has answered A LOT of questions. I have been complaining to my GP about a whole host of things for 2 years that NOW I find are all on the list of symptoms for this disease. Does anyone else here have this disease? How has yours beeen dealt with? My Dr thinks that the nodule has created my hyperthyroidism, but that in time I will go the other direction until my thyroid finally dies off.
Do you think this will affect my hyster on July 5?

PS does anyone have any experience how long my throat is going to feel like this? My throat hurts so bad, and I feel like it is halfway closed off.

Re: Hashimoto (auto immune thyroid disease) ??

So glad you do not have cancer - I also have several thyroid nodules, the biggest one is the size of a grape. I also had the nodules biopsied - not fun! This fall after I am recovered enough from the hysterectomy I will have surgery to remove the nodules. Between my fibroids and thyroid nodules I feel like Miss Lumpy Bumpy! Good luck with everything!

Re: Hashimoto (auto immune thyroid disease) ??

I just joined the forum today and yours was one of the first posts that I saw. I also have Hashimotos thyroiditis. I was diagnosed about four years ago and it has been challanging but finally I am on the correct medicine and starting to feel better. It sounds as if you may have better luck with your diagnosis so congrats on that and I wish you nothing but the same with your upcoming surgery. I will be having a TAH on July 11 and my pre-op appt is tomorrow morning so I'm positive that I will be back here looking for some opinions and support soon.

Best Wishes
