Awake Intubation
Hi ladies, so I am having my surgery due to endometrial cancer on the 30th, I had an issue with general anesthetic during my D&C which found the cancer, my gyn said they had a hard time intubating me. I am overweight and was told this was the reason why.
Naturally my gyn-onc was concerned about this and had me meet with the anesthesiologist lasts week. She asked me if I had sleep apnea and I said not to my knowledge and hubby told her he's never witnessed me snoring loudly or stop breathing/gasping, she examined my throat etc, she said her plan of action will be to intubate me before surgery, she assured me there is only minor discomfort, that they will apply a local freezing and something in my IV but I will be awake.
I am very scared about this, I have anxiety and this has just scared me beyond belief. I watched a video of a doc doing the procedure on himself in front of a group of med students to show how "easy" it was but it scared me even more lol. (need to stay off google!)
I was just curious if any of you have had this done, and what your experience or recollection of it was.
Thanks in advance

Re: Awake Intubation
Hi
I have had a few surgeries over the years. Not for my recent hysterectomy, but I HAVE been intubated while awake before. It was NOT bad, really. They gave me something via IV that heck, I didn't care what they did to me. Seriously. They could've amputated limbs for all I cared at that point. And I don't even think they did any "freezing" of my throat, either. It was just like, boom, and it was in. Virtually seconds.
I hope this helps a little for what it's worth. I can't tell you not to be nervous, I was, and I assure you, it did go really, really well (and quick).
Best wishes!!!

Re: Awake Intubation
I used to work in a procedure area and have seen people intubated awake . Easy to say - but don't be scared they really know what they are doing , it is a controlled environment , unlike in an emergency . You will be OK . Good luck .
