New and nervous

Hi everyone! I just found this wonderful website. My surgery is scheduled for Sept 11 and I really don't know anything about what to expect or what I should do to prepare. I do have family coming out to help since I have two young children (3 y/o and a 1 y/o). I am having a hysterectomy, but they are leaving my ovaries. I have a prolapsed uterus, a severe rectocele and a cystocele. My Dr. is hoping that once they take out my uterus my bladder will be fine and I won't need a sling. He said we won't know for sure until he gets in there. He also told me he is pretty sure it should all be able to be done vaginally. Is there any help or tips anyone can give me. I also had a question about the mesh. My GYN seems like he thinks the mesh is good. I really haven't ever looked into any of this. I didn't ever think I would be having this kind of surgery at 31. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Re: New and nervous

Hi Irish! Hugs to you! What a lot to deal with and having little ones, too! BIG hugs!

I had all the repairs you're looking at plus a bit more. I had a mesh repair as my urogyno has a good success rate with it and wanted to give me the strongest possible repair as I am a dance teacher. It was a long surgery/big procedure and the recovery was fine but long. Please make sure you have a lot of help lined up for your household and kiddos! You only have one chance to heal and you have to take that time for yourself!

The best place to get info is on the pelvic floor forum here. As you are doing your reseacrh and thinking of questions that will be a great help.

GOOD LUCK to you and your young family! I know all will work out great for you!

Re: New and nervous

There is a section called hints for members in the pre op forum. It is full of threads from other sisters with hints and ideas for preparation. I found it invaluable for getting myself and my house and family prepared for surgery and recovery! Good luck with your surgery!!

Re: New and nervous

Thank you guys. I will definitely check out the other forums. I have known about the surgery since May, but we had to wait until it was a good time for my Husband and family to help. My husband had just gotten back from Afghanistan and started in a new shop. So having to take leave right away for a surgery wasn't an option. I wasn't nervous at all, but now that I am getting a lot closer the nerves are setting in.
