Upcoming Hysterectomy 6/8 - Question about getting active again!

Hello all,

This is my second post on the site. My laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy is scheduled this Monday, June 8th.

I'm a roller skater and I love going for long distance speed skates. One of my concerns is getting back on my wheels. I was talking to my doctor at preop this past Tuesday and he was telling me that four weeks post op after LSH would be a good time to start getting active again.

My question is - what steps did you take to ease yourself back into an active lifestyle?

Thank you!

Re: Upcoming Surgery 6/8 - Question about getting active again!

Getting back to an active lifestyle should be gradual and requires some patience.
While you may get dr clearance at 4 weeks, you should not expect to be at the same level as you are now.

Again doing a little more every week and not pushing yourself will help you get where you want to be.

Doing too much, too soon could set uyou back.

Never feel discouraged, you will get there!

Re: Upcoming Surgery 6/8 - Question about getting active again!

Hi curlycue93 to HysterSisters!

I am so glad you found this site.

GPMS is correct - you really have to SLOWLY move yourself back into your exercise routine, and your normal life. I am a power walker and it took about nine months before I was back to my normal speed and distance.

Follow all of your doctors instructions top the letter, and do not push too hard. You may even want to wait longer than 4 weeks if it does not feel right. Listen to your body very carefully. Your body trumps your brain, which will go stir crazy during recovery. Remember you only get one chance to heal right.

I agree with the above! My normal exercise routine includes swimming, weight training, and yoga, and when I was cleared to resume all that, I found that my physical conditioning had taken a hit during the time off, so I had to ease back into it slowly, starting with fewer laps and lighter weights, then slowly work my way back to my pre-op level; I'm anticipating that I'll have to do the same thing once my local Y re-opens from being closed due to the pandemic. Remember that recovery is a marathon, not a sprint, and taking things slowly will be better for you in the long run. Best wishes for a successful surgery, and a smooth, fit recovery!
