Mental health concerns

so please forgive me if I'm in the wrong place. My TAH is scheduled for 5/24. I am bipolar and my biggest concern is my mental health before, during, and after surgery. I saw my therapist last week & talked about my therapy options while in the hospital and in the beginning of my recovery. She offered to visit me in the hospital -- she can't practice in the hospital so this would just be a short visit to check in on me. I really appreciate this offer, but I don't know the "right" response to this. Has anyone been in this situation? Having her stop by sounds comforting and embarrassing at the same time. She's seen me at my worst mentally, but then I will be at my worst physically. Any advice?

Thanks!

Re: Mental health concerns

i am also bipolar and wondered the same... but i have read that after a hysterectomy may help with mental disorders because our hormones are not going totally crazy

Re: Mental health concerns

That's what I'm hoping for. I've read similar things, but then there are those that say it will get worse. I'm choosing to ignore those for now.

Re: Mental health concerns

purplepzzzz! I haven't been in this situation, but just wanted to say that if there was ever a time to totally put yourself first, and ask for whatever will bring you support and comfort, now is the time! If having her pop in on you will feel good, then go for it. Nobody looks their physical best when they're in the hospital, and since it was her that offered, I would guess that she knows what to expect and won't place any judgment on you.

Wishing you a smooth surgery and recovery! Be patient and kind to yourself in the weeks and months after surgery. It seems that hormonal response to surgery does vary alot from one lady to the next but try to keep the longer term in sight.

Re: Mental health concerns

Thanks stiny0130. I'll stay in touch and we can compare notes. Here's to improved mental well-being.

Fire, thanks for your advice. I really needed to hear what someone else thought since I was feeling pretty insecure. I thought I was being very selfish for wanting to accept her offer, but you're right; she did offer, and it's probably ok to be a little selfish during this time. There will definitely be no judgment on her part, and she used to work in a hospital so it won't be a new experience for her. Thanks for the encouragement.

Re: Mental health concerns

purplepzzzz! I really don't think it's selfish at all to want to see her, I think it's smart and honest to ask for the support!

Keep us posted on how it goes for you!

Re: Mental health concerns

Thanks so much! It occurred to me that the only reason to have her stop is if I want/need it -- it certainly isn't for her benefit.

Re: Mental health concerns

fire is so right! Put yourself first!

I'm bipolar too, and in therapy we're working on preparing for before and after surgery - using coping techniques for depression and mini-manic, distraction ideas (watching Netflix and/or playing video games in the bedroom), writing in my journal, reading, working with my workbooks, crocheting, staying on track with medications, eating properly, realizing it's good and important to reach out and ask for help, etc..

Your therapist wants you to be healthy, comfortable, and know you're supported. If that means letting her visit you then by all means let it happen. Every little bit helps.

Be good to yourself!

Re: Mental health concerns

I agree with the other (((sisters))). If it would make you feel better if she stopped for a visit, then by all means invite her!

Hoping all goes well.
