Upcoming hysterectomy (LAVH): Weight gain? Binder?

I hear some stories about weight gain after surgery, and I wonder, is that common? And is a binder necessary after a LVH?

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy (LAVH): Weight gain? Binder?

I think the weight gain is not a given. It happens to some and some even lose weight after. If you are concerned, I would just be aware going in and try to eat well, knowing your activity will be limited during your recovery.

I am only about a week out from surgery myself, so I am not really speaking from experience of course yet, but this was a concern of mine and I have done a little research and this is how I am approaching things.

As far as the binder goes, I think it really varies. Some women love them and others do just fine without them. I have heard women say that if you are a little heavier, you may want one and if you are on the leaner side, might not, but that was not really the case for me. I am pretty thin and I am glad I have one. It just makes me feel more supported when I stand up and allows me to feel more comfortable walking for longer periods of time. I also like the gentle pressure it gives to my low back. I really liked it in those first few days especially but I am just over a week out and still glad I have it.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy (LAVH): Weight gain? Binder?

Hi Aldisra -

Everyone is different, but weight gain after surgery is not a given. I had my surgery more than three years ago, and I have not gained weight. I exercise frequently, and eat a healthy diet. Here is an article that may provide information: Weight Gain after Hysterectomy.

A binder is a personal choice - I had a TAH BSO, and I never felt like I needed one. Some women swear by them. So it is really what you would like.
