Upcoming hysterectomy: Will my hair fall out from the anesthetic?

I have very long hair, past my butt. I decided yesterday to get it cut shorter so I could easily maintain it during my recovery time. My surgery is about a week away. The hair stylist kinda scared me. She said I might lose some of my hair for up to a year after surgery from the anesthetic. Has anyone experienced this? I am not a vain person but it was huge decision for me to cut my hair short and while she's cutting it she telling me this! AAAAHHH! I'm a little freaked to say the least.

Re: Will my hair fall out from the anesthetic?

I shed a lot after surgery for about 2 months. It is growing back quickly. The shock of the body having surgery, I believe causes it to fall out. Don"t worry it will only be temporary if it happens to you. As above not everyone sheds hair.. Menopause can also causes hair to thin out too...

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Will my hair fall out from the anesthetic?

I didn't lose any right after, but for women who do, it is not usually a lot. I have lost some from hormone issues and a lot of stress, but I am nowhere near balding. It's just thinner and grows back when hormones are better and stress is reduced.

I bet you have beautiful hair, and it probably grows quickly!!! I also have butt length hair...thought about cutting it, too, but nah. I have had quite a few surgeries in my life. Most recent was last year...I endured 5 small ones, all under anesthesia. I did lose a little more than usual for a short time...but I only noticed on my brush. My hysterectomy is September. I have a feeling once it done, everything on my body will start to be healthy than it has been.

Good luck with your surgery and recovery!!!

Thank you for the replies. I feel more at ease now. I am just so new to this and I am so thankful for you ladies that share your experiences. I appreciate it so much! My hair does grow quickly so maybe it won't be so bad.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Will my hair fall out from the anesthetic?

I shed a good deal of hair for 3 months after surgery, I mean to the scary level BUT it did stop and started regrowing. Now 11 months after surgery it's back to normal.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Will my hair fall out from the anesthetic?

I shed more than normal for the first few months post op, I have naturally curly very thick hair, and no one could tell. The shedding slowed down and my hair is just as thick if not thicker than before surgery, and it's gotten super long too. Almost to my butt, which I haven't been able to get it this long in at least 20 years. Also, I'm in surgical menopause with no HRT.
