~~~SCARED of Gas Pains---Y'OUCH~~~
Oh Lord, gas pains were FAAAAR worse for me than any other kind of pain from the op itself. Here's what helped me...
1. My doc ordered me Malcon...I think that was the name. It's a med that "gobbles" up the gas. I don't know if it helped, but I dread to think of what I would have felt like without it.
2. The pain was much worse for me when they had me sit in the recliner. Sitting on anything hard was awful. Lying on my right side was very helpful, though; I think this particular position was the most effective thing for me.
~~~SCARED of Gas Pains---Y'OUCH~~~
I have had 2 laps, where gas was painful, with my TVH, it wasnt as bad, although uncomfortable.
I used gas-x once the second day in the castle, my ob/gyn said it was okay, so it may have helped. I also used it I think atleast twice more after getting home on the third day.
Be prepared, have some on hand, bring it with you, clear it of course with your doctor before taking it. Maybe they will have something better for you at the hospital.
I also was on a very light diet (my choice) the day before (no bowel prep) and couldnt really eat much until 2 days post-op. So that may have helped as well.
Oh and yes, side lying is way more comfy, and makes it easier to pass the gas!
Best wishes to you!

~~~SCARED of Gas Pains---Y'OUCH~~~
I had this really bad several years ago so I was worried about it, but it was almost non existent this time. I also ate very lightly the day before the surgery (no bowel prep) and didn't eat for a couple of days after the surgery due to nausea. I drank a lot of fluids, used gas-x, walked as soon as possible and don't be afraid to pass gas! It's embarrassing but it really helps. Last, if you can't walk try to bring your knees up towards your chest and roll your knees from side to side. Good luck! This turned out not to be a problem at all!
I heard all of this before my surgery too. It was almost non existent for me. I have more now two weeks post-op than I did with the surgery. I just have gas, though, no pains. I took Gax-X everyday and stool softeners. Still use the stool softeners every day and only Gas-x as needed. Before I went into surgery the OR nurse said my doctor was very good about getting all of the excess gas out before he ended the surgery. Not sure what that means. Anyway, you will be fine. Walking helped A LOT and lying on my side as well. Good luck.
~~~SCARED of Gas Pains---Y'OUCH~~~
I had a TAH on a Wednesday, and the gas pains started late Thursday evening. (And I had walked a lot on Thursday!) By Friday noontime, I was miserable. I kept walking, laying n my side, moving my knees from side to side, but no relief. I finally ended up getting a Fleets enema, and that did the trick. I didn't have a BM, but I did pass gas finally. It was instant relief.
Other than that day, I haven't had too much problem with gas.

I would agree with all of the above and add that warm peppermint tea helps as well. I drank some on the second day and it did help with the pains. I too layed on my side and walked alot to get rid of it.
Hope this helps

Oh, yes, thanks Kim. I drank lots of hot tea. Hot tea really helped. Mine was just regular tea bags. It was wonderful. Thanks for mentioning that!
