Upcoming May hysterectomy: Shoes and bending

I was thinking about shoes of all kinds. I am notorious for wearing those gripper socks in my house because we have ceramic tile and wood flooring. I have rubber soled slippers as well. But I was also thinking about everyone talking about not being able to bend after surgery so I ordered some slip-on keds to walk.

As I thought about this more I began to wonder, how do you do things without bending like tying shoes, putting on socks, getting dressed? I just don't see that is possible.

Re: Shoes and bending

Make sure you get a list of recovery restrictions from your surgeon.

Bending, while somewhat uncomfortable for some is very rarely a restriction.

Alternative can be squatting or use a grabber.

Re: Shoes and bending

I had a TAH and bending was a restriction for me personally. If I forgot and started to bend to get something, I saw stars. But we are all different and some gals have no problem.

Definitely ask your own doctor - following is an interesting thread on “bending” where members received varying instructions on bending and squatting.

If bending to tie your shoes is a concern, then I recommend elasticized laces to turn your shoes into slip-ons, which can be ordered online from many shoe retailers, or purchased at many home health care stores; your local home health care store may also sell an elongated shoe horn or other device to facilitate slipping your shoes on and off. Best wishes for a successful surgery and a smooth recovery!

Re: Shoes and bending

Wow.......I never ever heard of elasticized shoelaces. My husband will thank you forever for that and me too. Thanks!

Re: Shoes and bending

I stuck my foot in my slip on shoes and brought my foot up and crossed it on my knee to get the heel in. My husband suggested a long shoe horn and that worked well too.
