question about things to take to the castle
my surgery is in 2 weeks Nov 1st , I have been trying to think of things to pack to take to the castle , One of the things that I have noticed on some posts , is that everyone recommends taking stool softners , and Gas x did you take that with you or do they offer those to you at the hospital ???

Re: question about things to take to the castle
I packed a bunch of things I thought I would need/want during my stay at the castle. The only things I used were my lip balm and iPhone. I even used the hospital's toothbrush and tooth paste because at one point after surgery a nurse came in with the stuff and said time to brush....that felt sooooo good.
Pack what you think you might want but pack light. I had zero desire to put my own pjs on. I wasn't there long enough to walk the halls so I didn't use my slippers or the TWO bathrobes I packed!!

Re: question about things to take to the castle
My take is it's always best to bring it... especially if you'll have someone else with you -- have them hold it for you.
My experience in the hospital wasn't "I need this-I get this". There's a [necessary] process so it was more like "I know I need this, I need to hope I'm awake so I remember to ask the nurse when she flies in and out, I hope he/she asks the doctor right away, and I hope he/she orders it from the pharmacy right away and finally I hope it's not too long a wait for it to come up from the pharmacy!"
For the meds I brought with me I gave it to my nurse, they got approval and I got it! For my money, the more self sufficient and prepared you can be, the easier you'll be in and out of the castle! I brought most of my meds and would add cepacol drops to it as well...

Re: question about things to take to the castle
My surgery started around 11:30am Tuesday and was home around the same time Wednesday
The pain has been manageable its more like discomfort. I was in so much pain pre op from fibroids that the "pain" I have now is more cramp like. I take 3 Advil every 6 hours. The worst is the waiting. I felt like once I was out of the pre op waiting room and back getting ready I could have run into the OR I was so ready to get it over with. I am taking recovery seriously and not doing much. You'll be fine too!!!!

Re: question about things to take to the castle
I agree 100%. I did not have real, intense pain, but I did have spells of "restless discomfort". when I couldn't get comfortable ANYWHERE, I was really swollen in the belly, and any type of movement produced a pretty intense pulling sensation. Having said that, it was more frustrating than anything, but certainly manageable. I took very few hard core drugs, and I am a huge baby.
My largest problem even today (5 weeks post-op) has been what I call the "resetting" of my bowels. I started taking stool softeners as soon as I was released from the hospital and they have helped. However, I guess I got too used to being extremely "regular" - having a BM the same time every day with little effort. That's changed a lot, but is slowly getting better. I've always had cranky bowels, so this does not surprise me.
Believe it or not, I took my favorite bathrobe and slippers with me, and my favorite fleece throw. I found them to be extremely comforting, and my room was COLD, so I'm glad I had the robe. My nurses even commented on how "snuggly" and content I looked after having major surgery.
Best of luck..... the actual recovery is NOTHING like what your mind makes it out to be beforehand. I even had a post-op infection and had to be readmitted for 3 days. Even still, it was NOTHING like the torture I experienced with fibroids. You'll do fine...

Re: question about things to take to the castle
I packed so many things and the only things I used were iPhone, robe and lip balm. I had Di Vinci too and you're in and out so quickly you don't really have a chance to use anything. For me, the pain killers and anesthesia made it impossible to concentrate, so books and games were a no go. I walked the halls (hence the robe to cover that horrid hospital gown) and rested. You might want to bring a snack like animal crackers in case you don't have an appetite for hospital food, but I pretty much didn't care what they fed me, I ate it!
Good luck with your surgery!

Re: question about things to take to the castle
LoveBuga, take whatever you think will make you comfortable for the time you will be in the hospital!
But, all I used was my iphone and a hair elastic. The hospital supplied everything else i needed including stool softener.
I did bring a robe, but my Mom ended up wearing it when she stayed with me overnight.
Good luck to you on November 1 !

Re: question about things to take to the castle
My hospital provided non skid socks, disposable panties, pads, Blistex, shampoo, shower gel, toothbrush and toothpaste.
I brought Gas-X but did not take it. I did use it once I was home, so definitely have some handy in case you need it. Should have maybe brought stool softeners b/c they did not offer them. I started taking them as soon as I got home and I had no problems with constipation.
Phone, phone charger, Kindle, some light reading like magazines, hand lotion, and I had my husband bring DVDs and my laptop when he came back to visit me that evening.
A comb for your hair, slip on shoes for the ride home.
