So many questions.
I'm probebly posting in the wrong spot, if so I apologise, I've been reading and reading this site and my mind is pretty overwhelmed at the moment (And being exhausted doesn't help my thinking either).
I find out today when my hysterectomy will be. It will be soon though, because the doctor says we need to act quickly.
I've had a few months of non-stop heavy bleeding that dropped my blood count to below 5, it's taken a few months to build it back up to 12 but to do that required the taking of a large amount of hormones, transexamic acid, iron injections etc (taking 27 pills a day and feel like I rattle when I walk lol)
I also had a curette, and a mirena inserted, but that fell out after a week due to heavey bleeding. The problem is a large fibroid that could not be removed dureing the curette. Doctor says that she has to do a hysterectomy and she can't do it the 'easy way', whatever that means.
So, the questions. First, how often are blood transfusions needed during hysterectomies? Is it common to need to be transfused? (I can't accept a transfusion, so it's really worrying me and I've googled till my eyes are sore and just find conflicting medical veiwpoints)
I have a slight prolapse that causes urinary frequancy, but not incontinance. I've heard incontinance can be a problem afterwards, if so, is there anything that can be done to prevent that?
Any tips for dealing with the anxiety and fears? Other then the curette, this is the first time I've faced any sort of surgical proceedure and I'm already feeling the beginnings of panic attacks and I don't even have the actual date it will be done untill I see my doctor at 1.30 today.
Also, I have four children who are home schooled, I can take things easy once I'm home and still school them, but will there be much time where I'm feeling too unwell to concentrate? (odd question I know, but I don't want them falling behind schedual)

Hello gottaluvit and
We’re happy you joined the Hystersisters community! There is a ton of solid information on the site, and the members have unlimited cyber-hugs to dispense and experiences to share with you at every stage of your journey to good health!
If you haven’t already done so, please do yourself a favor and register to receive Hysterectomy Checkpoints. It’s one of the best features of the site, in my opinion -- designed to accompany you through the entire hysterectomy experience from start to finish, and beyond!
You can take the opportunity to prepare yourself for what’s ahead by reading the Pre-Op Articles. You might find the following particularly helpful:
Coping With Pre-Op Anxiety and Fear
What to Expect at the Hospital
What to Bring to the Hospital
How Others Can Help
Blood transfusions for hysterectomy procedures are uncommon, so I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. Same goes for urinary troubles afterwards. If you are among the minority who have this trouble your medical provider can assist you but at this stage of the game it's probably best not to concern yourself with this.
Best wishes as you prepare for your trip to the Castle!

So many questions.
Would you consider donating a pint of your own blood pre-surgery in case they need it? If you can't have transfusions on religious grounds, I totally respect that - I just wondered if donating to yourself would be kind of ok.
My surgeon said that I nearly needed one - fibroid was wider than they thought - but I didn't. Blood count was 106, which freaked the nurse because being UNDER 100 is normal for gyn surgery.
I was in the OR Tuesday morning, and home at my mom's on Thursday.
Based on how I was feeling, I would say you might TRY to homeschool VERY PT towards the end of week 2. Read the Checkpoints here, and ask your doc.
If your kids are well-behaved, that helps.
Are there friends or family who could help out - or another home-school mom or dad?
Not that you'll hurt...you'll just be So Darn Tired for some time. Just my experience, ok?
HUGS and I hope all works out well.

So many questions.
Very few transfusions are necessary after a hysterectomy.
An Easy hysterectomy might be the laporoscopic type... there are more than one. An abdominal incision is probably what the Dr is looking at.
I homeschool only one and some times two (a little one comes to visit and so does school when she's here). I felt up to doing school after 3.5 wks.

Hi - I have a small suggestion for the pre-op anxiety and fear... like you I had never faced any kind of surgery or really any significant medical procedure ever in my life...
I was terrified!!! One thing that really helped me was to listen to a CD on headphones of music that made me feel really powerful ... not the relaxing, meditative type stuff (though if that works for you great!) I listened to loud, energetic stuff that made me happy and tap my feet... I even brought my CD player and headphones into the pre-op waiting area with me ... it really helped a lot and had also helped me through the recovery process...
Just a suggestion...

So many questions.
Thank you all so much for your replies. Music sounds like a good idea and I'm filling my MP3 player full of some favs now.
Donating my own blood isn't possible, not just because of my reasons for refusing blood, but because there isn't time. I go in tomorrow, Doctor says it's an emergancy situation and I need the surgery right now before my blood levels drop too low.
I'm scared out of my wits and not afraid to admit it, so maybe the fact that its schedualed so quickly is a good thing?
I've read through heaps of the information on this site (thank you all for pointing me in the right direction) and printed some things out to take with me.
I'm in the process of rushing around cleaning house and packing, so thats keeping me occupied, but I actually feel kind of shocked, really thought I'd have more time up my sleeve to think about this then just a day.
See you when I get back.
