Upcoming full hysterectomy & BSO, Post menopausal: second thoughts

I’m scheduled for a full hysterectomy in 2 weeks due to an ovarian cyst the size of a watermelon. I’m worried that I might feel worse after having everything taken out even though I’ve already gone through natural menopause. Do I want to have them take EVERYTHING out? I’m fearful and stressing out. I know I can change my mind but I don’t want to be foolish either. Has anyone else gone through this? Thanks so much!

Re: Post menopausal: hysterectomy second thoughts

Obviously the ovary with the watermelon attached has to go. Why is the doctor proposing to remove the other ovary, your uterus and your cervix vs. just that one ovary?

what is the reason your dr. wants to remove everything and not just the ovary/cyst?

Re: Post menopausal: hysterectomy second thoughts

Hi Bombshell2K to HysterSisters -

I am so glad you found this site.

I am a ovarian cyst sister, although yours is much larger than mine. I had a very large grapefruit sized complex ovarian cyst (12x9x11 cm) on my left ovary. I also had numerous uterine fibroids. I had a cancer concern, and I had everything out. For me, my situation was such that that the other ovary would do the same thing in very short order. Here is an article that may provide information: Ovarian Cysts

However, I will not lie to you - I do feel worse after my surgery. I also was rudely dumped into surgical menopause after this surgery, so it was a pretty dramatic change for me. I am on HRT, and I will be for the rest of my life.

You can experience surgical menopause even after natural menopause if both of your ovaries are removed. Here is an article: Surgical Menopause after Natural Menopause.

Talk to your doctor about your options, and if just removing one ovary and the cyst is an option for you. You can get alternate opinions, if you desire.
