Bipolar Disorder and Hyst

I am looking at my surgery date less than 2 weeks away, and I am so scared! My pain and ridiculously long periods prompted my decision to go through with this, and I am glad I have made this choice (so far).

My biggest concern is that I am Bipolar and I am worried about taking my meds (anti-depressants and mood stabilizers) just before and after my surgery. I am afraid the post-op depression will kill me or make me totally nuts~!

Any help to ease my fears?

Bipolar Disorder and Hyst

I have depression, and doc told me to that I could keep taking my meds as usual up until and after the hyst. I have been having a few more down days since finding out about the upcoming hyst, so my PCP may change my meds a little bit in the coming months to see what works best for me. Please talk to your doctor, but in my case, I get to stay on my meds as usual.

My DD has been diagnosed bi-polar... Ask your doc about taking your meds. If they want you to stop them before surgery, ask how long before... Make them aware of the rebound effects that most meds for bi-polar have. I don't think that they'll make you stop them.

Please make sure to call your doc right away... I know that you don't need this added stress and having answers help to ease your swings.

If you need anything, to talk, a shoulder to cry on or even just to vent, feel free to PM or email me!!

Queen Mindy,

I am also bipolar on meds (Effexor, Lamictal, Wellbutrin, Seroquel) and I worked with my psych. to manage the off / on of the meds - basically he had me taper down on the effexor (it can cause extra bleeding) and then pick up everything as usual the evening following the surgery.

I'm ramping back up on the Effexor now (after surgery tues).

So I really only missed one dose of pills on the AM of surgery.

Definitely talk to your psych and your doc about your concerns, they can make sure that you won't miss your meds longer than one dose.

It's really important to talk with them about it anyhow because some of the meds can have an impact on bleeding and/or anesthesia.

Good luck - you're going to do great!
