Help

I am also scheduled for a hyst due to endo. Mine is on the 16th of this month. Must admit the nerves are really getting to me. Anyone had one for this and did it work?? I also get bad migraines hormonallyl, but with keeping my ovaries am assuming that that won't change. Any advice is very very welcome!

endometrisios cured by hysterectomy?????

happytails and leela; I have endo as well stage IV. I am having my TAH on Aug 23rd the same date as yours happytails. Anyway I strongly suggest you speak to your Dr. about this in more detail, because if you are already scheduled for your procedures but do not know if they will help, that concerns me.
I was told this, The hysterectomy will help with the heavy bleeding I have and terrible pain. I also have fibroids so those will be gone as well. I have opted to keep my ovaries, so that means they will continue to produce the hormones that feed the endo. So the Dr. cannot guarantee I will not still have trouble in the future with pain from endo, but it should be reduced greatly or be gone (lets hope) He did warn me that in the future I may have to come back and have my ovaries removed if the pain due to endo reoccurs. But even if that is true then I would have had more time with my ovaries working normally and I will benefit from that time at least. I don't know if you have heavy and long periods, mine come anytime they want and two in one month is starting to be a common thing now. So at least the dreadful bleeding will stop.
So, this is the information I was told, it is a bit of a risk leaving your ovaries if you have endo, but it is a personal decision that you need to think about and discuss with your Dr. until you feel you can make an informed decision. Good luck and God Bless

endometrisios cured by hysterectomy?????

First s to you all with endo. I, too, am an endo gal.

Now for the bad news: A hyst does not cure endo.

Having as much endo removed as possible during your hsyt is going to put you ahead of the game. However, if any is left behind, as it can hide very well and can be microscopic and thus undetected, it can grow and spread. Endo "lives" off of estrogen so if you keep your ovaries, as I did, they can feed the remaining endo.

However, if you have your ovaries removed, you may or may not be able to take HRT to combat your surgical menopause due to the endo. And estrogen can be stored in your body fat, endo can make its own estrogen, and there are natural products such as black cohosh and soy that have a form of estrogen that also can feed endo. So removing your endo does not guarantee an endo to endo.

Thus it is very important to know as much as possible about endo prior to deciding to have a hyst. A good place to start is with Hyster Sisters' Endo/Adeno Resources. As you read through information, write down any questions and concerns you have and then sit down with your dr and talk them all over. Having at least a second opinion is also a great idea. If at all possible, visit with an endometriosis specialist.

I had my hyst for stage IV endo at the age of 25. What my hyst did do was stop my heavy bleeding that had basically been continuous for two years. It also removed the majority of my endo, especially my endo covered uterus.

Because of my age, my dr and I felt keeping my ovaries would be benefitical to my overall health and was worth the risk of them feeding my endo. I also have endo on my bowel walls that could not be removed without great risks to my health so we knew it was risky.

I made the right decision for me and I am pleased with my decision. But no, I am not cured. I had very little pain prior to my hyst, and now almost 6 years later I do have pain. My GYN and I think it is the endo, adhesions and scar tissue -- but without a lap, we can only assume.

Weigh the pros and cons for you. There are women who have had a hyst and do well for many years. My SIL is one of them. But there are others who continue to have issues, such as me.

One thing to ask your dr about is using progesterone to treat any remaining endo after your hyst.

The more you know, the better informed you are, the more likely you will make the right decision for you.

Best wishes to each of you for successful outcomes, whatever you decide! Reading Endo/Adeno: Stories of Triumph over Pain can offer some encouraging stories for you!

endometrisios cured by hysterectomy?????

I have endo, adeno, fibroids, and bilateral occult hernias (and possibly other issues.) I did not feel comfortable with my OB/GYN and sought out a RE who specializes in the treatment of endo. He feels my best chance for relief from horrific pain and constant bleeding is a complete hysterectomy including my ovaries. (I am almost 45) My bleeding and pain is so bad that I am willing to opt for any treatment that will provide some relief.

There is a section of the board devoted to stories from endo sufferers and I would recommend reading through those posts. I also strongly advise any endo/adeno sufferer to find a good RE who knows how to find the best solution for your individual symptoms.

Finally, make sure YOU feel comfortable with any course of action before taking it.

Good luck to all of you!

My biggest suggestion is to research. Endo is not cured by a hysterectomy

I would definitely get another opinion. There are options for pain relief without a hysterectomy if you don't want to have one.

I had 4 laps, one laparatomy, I tried bcp, depo, danocrine, lupron, and natural things. When all else failed I had my hystectomy with no regrets.

Don't rush into a hysterectomy if your not ready.

I also have endo. Had my hysto two weeks ago and so far, I haven't regretted a minute of it. What I can tell you is that you need to talk to your DR and get as many "second, third, and even fourth opinions" as necessary for you to be able to make an educated decision. I went to several GYNOs in town and after talking with my aunt (a nurse at the local hospital) I learned that my regular DR is the best in town and this is his specialty. After 3 miscarriages due to endo and years of pain (I started when I was only 9) I finally decided that this was the right move... timing was right because that is when the pre-cancerous cells showed up. Good news - pathology report said that endo was the only big risk. My DR and I chose to take it all. Leave nothing behind because if I can't have kids, I certainly don't want cancer either and my risk was higher than most.

Good luck with your decision and know that this website has a wealth of resources to use.... study, study, study before making the decision.
