Removing both ovaries- End of orgasms?
Hello, I am new here, too. I've been reading pre-op posts for a few weeks and it has helped me find answers to many questions. It is comforting to know others feel the same as I do.
I am very worried about sexual dysfunction in the months to come since I am have a daVinci procedure with a full hysterectomy and both ovaries removed. I have suffered with endometriosis for many years. The doctor told me that removal of both ovaries protects me from ovarian cancer. And, since I am over 50 years old, that this is protocol.
I hope to hear that women who have had both ovaries removed are still able to reach orgasm. I've read that after several months, many women have difficulty with this. If you still have a satisfying sex life, please let us know! Thanks

Re: Removing both ovaries- End of orgasms?
The ovaries that were recently removed during my TAH had in fact been non-functional since 2009, when I went through menopause. Trust me, there have been many, many orgasms since 2009. Post-surgery, I've only started exploring around down there within the past week. The preliminary results have been really, really good. ;-)

No ovaries here, no problems. I'll just leave it at that.

Re: Removing both ovaries- End of orgasms?
I am six months out and have no ovaries, and I have better orgasms now than before the surgery. My libido has increased dramatically.
Another thought, why is it standard protocol to remove your ovaries if you are over 50? I haven't heard that one. Even when one is naturally (as opposed to surgically) post-menopausal the ovaries still produce some hormones that cause many women to experience some nasty menopause symptoms. If your ovaries are healthy and you have no risk factors for ovarian cancer, then you may want to consider keeping them. I wish I could have kept mine. I am 46. Perhaps you might want to get a second opinion on having them removed.
Finally, I just want to add, in case you didn't know, hysterectomy is NOT a cure for endometriosis. Only excision of all endometrial implants can provide a permanent solution. We have several members who have had endo symptoms return after hysterectomy even if they had both ovaries removed and did not do hormone replacement. Here is a link to our endometriosis articles. It really helped me to understand a lot about my endo diagnosis by reading them: Endometriosis Articles. I hope you find the solution that is right for you.

Re: Removing both ovaries- End of orgasms?
I noticed loss of libido and vaginal dryness after menopause, but not the ability to have orgasm. This didn't change after my ovaries were removed during my total hysterectomy. When we are over 50 chances are our ovaries are no longer producing estrogen, so aren't doing us much good anymore. You might ask your doctor about hormone replacement therapy if you find you have less desire; or use lubrication if you find dryness causes discomfort during sex.

Re: Removing both ovaries- End of orgasms?
Thank you ladies for all your responses. The reason I was told to have both ovaries removed is that the risk for ovarian cancer increases many times for women with endo who are post menopausal. I have suffered for many years and look forward to all that misery to come to an end.
I am extremely nervous about my upcoming surgery next week (yikes!). I will continue to read pre-op posts and suggestions from my "sisters".
I hope others who have had both ovaries removed (I am keeping my cervix) will continue to post about their sexual response since surgery. I want to be fully informed. Thanks.

Re: Removing both ovaries- End of orgasms?
Actually, there've been studies showing that even after menopause, the ovaries still have a protective effect for a woman's heart.
Back when I thought my post-menopausal bleeding was "just" PMB, my sister (a nurse-midwife and an NP) said, "If they do a hysterectomy, don't let them take your ovaries."
As it turned out, a D&C revealed endometrial cancer. I relayed this to Sis, whose reply was,"Okay, get rid of the ovaries!"
Removing the ovaries would definitely be standard procedure for a woman over 50 *who has cancer or is at a high risk of getting it*.

Re: Removing both ovaries- End of orgasms?
i had the ovaries removed too---I learned in a Psych course that there are two routes for orgasms and that one is with the uterus and the other is somewhere else--forgot where the route is but-I still have them---even without a uterus and ovaries. Don't worry.
