Hysterectomy 4 days after kidney stone surgery
After many years of suffering with very severe endo, I finally scheduled my hysterectomy for Feb 9th 2009. While not looking forward to the actual procedure, I have been very excited about what life will be like afterwards. Then, about 10 days ago, I found myself in the ER with kidney stones. I have one stuck in my left ureter, and after talking with the urologist, was told I had to have surgery to remove it BEFORE my hysterectomy and have a stent put in that would stay in until after my hysterectomy.
So I now have the kidney stone/stent surgery scheduled for Thursday Feb 5th. I'm now terrified of the next few weeks.
I have had many, many laps done for my endo. Docs have said they've never seen such a bad case, all of my insides were fused together after only a month since my last lap AND being put in a chemical menopause. I know what surgery is like, and while I don't enjoy it, I know I can handle it. I just don't know what it feels like to have something (i.e. uterus) removed. I'm assuming the recovery will be more difficult. And since I'll be recovering from the kidney stone removal and dealing with a stent (I've heard nothing but horror stories), I'm extremely nervous.
How hard is it to get to the bathroom after this surgery? (I'm having it done by the robotic method.) I ask because apparently the stent will cause me to have to go to the bathroom constantly (every 10 mins or so) and I'm really worried about this. I also will have to go the the urologist a few days after the hysterectomy to have the stent removed (It's an office procedure, no anesthesia and while quick, extremely painful)
Any words of advice and/or encouragement would be greatly appreciated. I know that a few months from now everything will be great, but getting through these next few weeks... I just don't know how I'm going to manage.

Hysterectomy 4 days after kidney stone surgery
I really don't know anything about kidney stone surgery; I can just imagine that two surgeries would blow your mind! I'm not surprised you are terrified.
I had a TAH/BSO, and I can't really describe what it's like to have stuff removed because I don't feel any different. Well, actually, I take that back; my uterus was "bulky" because of fibroids, and I had a big cyst on one ovary; my uterus was pressing on my intestines and probably my gall bladder because I used to get all sorts of weird tummy trouble and burning. Since all that stuff is gone, my digestive tract is much, much happier!
My recovery was not "difficult", really. My pain was very well controlled. Getting out of bed was hard work for a week or so, but that was temporary.
Re: going to the bathroom constantly...I am assuming you will have a catheter put in before your hysterectomy actually begins, and in my book, it's a godsend. You don't have to get out of bed to pee!!! Yay!!!
I'm sorry, but I don't know anything about stents.

Hysterectomy 4 days after kidney stone surgery
Hi Tabsfs and
I can understand your anxieties, I would be too. I will keep you in my prayers for everything to go smooth, hang in there sweetie and keep your faith....
about going to the bathroom after surgery, its not fun because you shouldnt push, thats why taking somekind of stool softener is most important. the pain from surgery is managable, to me the pain from endo was worse.
I dont know anything about stents, but if you go to this page on the right hand corner you can type the word
stent" where is says search and see what comes up.
also, if still unsure, you can go and get a second and even third opinion, it never hurts....

Hysterectomy 4 days after kidney stone surgery
My question is why wouldn't they do the 2 surgeries at the same time? Even if you have the DiVinci procedure, could they not do the stent before or after? The stent doesn't take that long and then you wouldn't be going under anesthesia twice in one week. And all the swelling from the first surgery will still be in full bloom 4 days later. Good luck and I hope you can find a solution that works for you. Having both at the same time is truly a nightmare.

I don't know about the kidney surgery..but wouldn't they be able to do the surguries at the same time? I know I'm having a lap and there are fixing a deviated septuim on me at the same time...it took alot of coordination but it is possible! Good Luck!

Hysterectomy 4 days after kidney stone surgery
I WISH it could all be done at once, but it's not an option for me They originally wanted to do the kindey stone removal last week, but the hospital just couldn't fit me in. If I don't have the stone sugery, my hysterectomy has to be cancelled which I really don't want to do.
Neither doctor seems at all concerned about the two surgeries being so close together, I'm just freaked out about how to survive the recovery!
I am hoping that I'll be able to convince them to remove the stent during the hysterectomy (after they're done), to avoid dealing with that immediately afterwards. Don't know how successful I'll be with that, but I'm going to try!

Hysterectomy 4 days after kidney stone surgery
Hello~
I have had to have stents put in twice and they have to be kept in at least 3-4 weeks, to keep the ureter open and healed before they can be removed. I am scheduled for my hysterectomy on April 9th, I have had problems with endo and also problems with my ureter and kidney stones. They think I might have endo wrapped around my ureter and that is why it has been plugged up. Once it was plugged and the other time I had 4 kidney stones. The stent is not painful but you can feel it every time you move you can feel it poking other organs. You will have to be on a bladder spasm medicine because the stent will make your bladder spasm constantly if you don't take the medicine it will feel like you constantly have to go. The stent procedure wasnt' so bad for me, I took the day of the procedure off and then the next day and then I went back to work and I am a mail carrier. But of course the hysterectomy is a totally different story. I have scheduled mine and I feel like a weight has been lifted but I am still very scared of what lies ahead of me. It is very scary not knowing what to expect during and after surgery. Best of luck to you....
keep us posted on how you are doing after your surgeries.

Hysterectomy 4 days after kidney stone surgery
Today is a bad day
I had my pre-op appointment today, and it just didn't go well... very frustrating. I know I have the BEST doctor, but the hospital staff just seemed so disorganized and couldn't answer a single question. Said I'd have to call my doctor instead.
I have 2 separate specialist that work at two different hospitals. So my 2 surgeries are at different hospital a couple of minutes away from each other. Seems the staff just can't grasp the concept that I'm having another surgery a few days before the hysterectomy. When they asked what meds I take, I explained that I don't know what meds I'll be on by then, because there will be meds from the first surgery. They got upset with me and said I couldn't take anything... well HELLO, I'm having surgery, I'm going to be receiving meds.
So basically I feel totally unprepared for everything I'm going to be going through, frustrated and scared.
I have a call in to my urologist to confirm everything they'll be giving me and then I'll call my gyn doc and tell them and try to straighten this all out.
This is just so overwhelming, frightening and frustrating. I feel like this isn't being taken as seriously as it needs to be taken. Maybe that's not the right way to say it, I'm not sure how I feel exactly and these meds make my head very fuzzy.
This is just a bad day, I can't wait to be past all of this!

Hysterectomy 4 days after kidney stone surgery
I have a chronic kidney problem, so I see a nephrologist on a regular basis. When it became apparent that I had to have a hysterectomy, my gyne was honest with me; she said she had never had a patient with severe kidney disease, so she had some questions herself. I encouraged her to speak with my nephrologist, which is really the only sensible thing to do. It should not be up to you to coordinate your care with two different doctors. They should be more professional and speak to each other directly, and then one of them should contact you to tell you exactly what the plan is.
