Re: Abdominal hysterectomy necessary for 9cm fibroid?
Hi there! Quick answer is that recovery time from surgery varies for everyone. It depends on the type of surgery and your body. For myself I was back at the office part-time week 4 and full-time week 5. I still took major naps because of fatigue.
I have heard mixed results from UAEs. It depends if you are okay with the risk of new fibroids possibly growing. You might need another UAE to reduce the size of those, etc. My sister had a UAE, then ended up having a hysterectomy this past week, since she grew new fibroids and wanted a more permanent solution.
It is a very personal choice. The decision depends upon what is more important to you. If you are not so sure about the second opinion, I would suggest getting a third opinion. You will figure everything out.

Re: Abdominal hysterectomy necessary for 9cm fibroid?
Throwing my story out there as well.. I have one that is 10cm and it has a few roomates that are growing. My GYN said the same thing yours said - because of the size of my uterus abdominal was the only option.
Not liking that very much, I got a referral to a laparoscopic surgeon who said minimally invasive is absolutely an option. I was relieved & scheduled it for May 2.
While waiting for the date, I called up another laparoscopic surgeon for a 2nd, 2nd opinion. She agreed that it could be done, and now I'm just waiting for May 2 to get here.
Self advocate as much as possible. Get as many opinions as you want. Talk to 10 surgeons if you need to. Whatever it takes to make sure you know your options and you're comfortable with your choice.
Good luck!

Re: Abdominal hysterectomy necessary for 9cm fibroid?
I too had an ~9cm abdominal fibroid removed via laparoscopy. I also had a larger cyst on one ovary that the doctor recommended was checked again after my next cycle to see if it was shrinking or growing - removal of the ovary was never mentioned. Surgery was 3 very small incisions (belly button, bikini line, abdomen), same day outpatient. Recovery was mixed - pain generally was minimal except when using core muscles to move from laying/sitting/standing but was incredible when sneezing. I would run from a doctor I felt was too casual - they could be the most competent doctor in the world, but if I don't have 100% trust, it's not worth the mental games. I've had six surgeries with six different surgeons (all but one with at least one second opinion) and greatly value a good doctor-patient relationship.

Re: Abdominal hysterectomy necessary for 9cm fibroid?
I have a 9cm fibroid. My doctor is doing the Da Vinci with Mollercation (inside the bag).
My uterus is also apparently very large. He did mention that if he sees he cannot do it Laparoscopically he will have to do the long cut. Hopefully that will not happen.
All the best to you!!!!
