Tell your doctor that your "sisters" at the Hystersisters website say, "It ain't so!" I've had no problems with my orgasms since my LAVH. In fact, they're better than before my surgery--much more intense!

Good luck to you!

Hi -
Please go to this website and read this paper done by a female doc:

www.ohanlan.com/total_laparo.htm

On page 4 of this paper, she says why hysterectomy should not leave the cervix in. She says that whether the cervix is left in or not, it doesn't affect enjoyment of sex or cause urinary or bowel problems. She says that 25% of women who retained their cervix had bleeding and 2% had cervical prolapse. Also she talks about the potential to get cervical cancer, pain, etc. My dr. told me he takes out the cervix because it can prolapse into the vagina. That was enough reason for me since a lot of my surgery involved fixing everything else that had already prolapsed (bladder, rectum). Hope this helps.

Well,

I don't think we can make blanket statements here. There are plenty of sisters who miss their cervix terribly. That said, I would say that the majority do not. IMHO, I think that all the evidence is not in yet. Perhaps different women have different responses?

I had an LSH. I experienced a lot of pain and 12 day mini periods afterwards for 6 months. The "uterine remnant" was actually prolapsing through my cervix!

So, I had a trachelectomy (removal of cervix). There was entrapped blood and endometriosis on my cervical stump. My doc (not the idiot who did the LSH!) is a professor at UC San Francisco and the chairman of OB/GYN at a very respectable hospital. Boy was he mad when I told him the first doc had left my cervix--esp since I'd had carcinoma in situ on it one year earlier. He does not believe that the cervix should ever be left and says that this is now the official stance in the UK (which is not to say that you can't keep your cervix if you want to!). He believes that the US will soon follow with the same stance.

BTW, it took 2 and a half hours to remove my cervix. I'd had a LEEP 2 years before, and then this LSH, so there was lots of scar tissue. I feel much better now, and am happy to report that sex is unchanged, if not better.

Thank you, (((cubby))) and (((ladyfair))), for providing the link to Dr. O'Hanlan's website. I think that it's always interesting to read the opinions of different doctors, in part, because they vary so widely. Among the thousands and thousands of doctors who have websites, you will find widely-disparate beliefs about the benefits and drawbacks of various surgical options available to women facing hysterectomy decisions.

(((Cherrykitty))), in partnership with your doctor, I hope you make the decisions that are best for you!

Many s and Best Wishes,

I just figured with my list of problems I'm not taking any chances and leaving it in, I had 2 scares when I was younger with basal cells and had to endure cone biopsies and all that jazz so let's get it all out now and be done with it! But yes the sex part did worry me but I am glad I am hearing such optimistic answers!
