It's helps to know that I am alone. I am confident we'll get through this with our sisters help.

Re: Hysterectomy's approaching: concerned about my emotional health
I can speak a little to this. Prior to my hysterectomy, I'd been in hospitals a few times for day surgery but hadn't stayed overnight in one since I was an infant. My finances are such that I couldn't afford a semi-private room. Also, I've got mild Asperger's, which means that having a lot of people around (esp. people I don't know well) can easily be overwhelming and distressing for me.
I brought with me not only ear plugs and eye shades for sleeping, but also a pair of ear muffs of the type worn on construction sites. They were $12 at WalMart. Mine are bright red. I figured that this would not only cut down on the noise but would also send a clear message that I didn't want to be disturbed.
As it happened, I never wore them. I lucked into a free bed in a semi-private. My roomie was a quiet middle-aged woman (like me!) with a quiet middle-aged husband. Their English was about as fluent as my French, so we exchanged pleasantries and thereafter ignored each other quite amicably.
The entire hospital experience turned out to be rather pleasant. Not everyone has this experience, but it can happen.

Re: Hysterectomy's approaching: concerned about my emotional health
When I go through my episodes I also have issues with eating. It's good to know that my appetite may go "wronky because I certainly don't want to lose any more weight. Within the last ten months since this ordeal, my weight has plummeted from 139lbs to 124. 'Your suggestion of eating frequent healthy small snacks is helpful; if I follow through, I may not worry as much about losing anymore pounds.

Re: Hysterectomy's approaching: concerned about my emotional health
I lose 5-10 lbs every year during tax season simply because that's a stressful time of year in my workplace and that's how my body reacts to stress. I had my hysterectomy a month after tax season ended, so I went from stressing about taxes to stressing about surgery. The morning of surgery - of course, this was after fasting - I weighed in at 116 lbs, and I'm 5'10".
Three days later, I weighed 137 lbs! It was all water weight, of course, and lost itself again over the next few days. I was able to maintain a stable weight for the first two weeks. After that my appetite perked, my healing body became capable of more activity and I very gradually started to get back to a healthier weight for me.

Re: Hysterectomy's approaching: concerned about my emotional health
You and me both! I have a history of major depression, generalized anxiety disorder and agoraphobia as the cherry on my sucky mental health sundae. I endured gallbladder surgery very well but that was a day surgery and I was back home a few hours after the operation was over. I know I won't be so lucky this time and I am honestly wondering how I will manage it. My agoraphobia is such that I can drive around town and do almost anything as long as I know I can get back home in an hour or so. I'm picturing myself hobbling out of the hospital, dragging an IV pole and heading for home (which is only about a mile away, so not an impossible feat!)
I'm also worried about the effect a hysterectomy will have on my mental health as my doctor wants to remove both ovaries but I won't be able to do HRT because of a family history of breast cancer. I've had major post-partum depression and PMS in the past so I am very sensitive to hormonal fluctuations and let's just say it ain't pretty. So I do understand your hesitation.

Re: Hysterectomy's approaching: concerned about my emotional health
I might have some good news for you on this one. Once you go through menopause - whether natural or surgical - the hormone fluctuations *go away*. They're not cycling every month, they steady out. So while the menopausal process itself may be rough, there's a light at the end of the tunnel for those of us whose hormonal cycles do a number on our mental health issues.
