Re: Stress
I don't want to say "don't worry" because everyone worries before a surgery. Esp. this one. Try and stay busy, that really helped me and focus on how well you'll feel afterwards once you've healed. My surgery was on Dec 12 and I'm feeling awesome. I'm actually starting to miss all the rest and healing time this month as I'm getting stronger. Sending you a big cyber hug and see you on the other side of surgery. It's great here!!! And no more super-huge periods....WHOO HOO!!!!

Re: Stress
Hi Donna,
I know exactly how you feel because I'm having my surgery this Friday as well. Whenever I start to get scared or overwhelmed I do some deep breathing. Nice long slow breath in and out while trying to clear your mind. If possible, try to think of all the positive things in your life. I'm also eating really healthy, doing more yoga and getting in as much exercise as possible.
I find it also helps to make different lists of what I need to do before surgery and what I want to bring with me. Also, I'll be staying with my mom for a short time once I get released from the hospital and have already brought over many books and magazines that I want to read while I'm recouperating.
If all else fails, ask you doctor to prescribe some valium. I have a bottle on hand for the night before as well as the morning of, which she said was ok to take with a small sip of water.
As everyone has said, we'll be happy once it's over!
Big Hugs,
Monsheri in CT

Re: Stress
It's normal and natural to be scared. But that saying is true, our minds always make things worse than they really are. I'm not saying it's easy, but you CAN make it through, and even with some complications, 17 days post op I already know that I'm better off now than before surgery. Movies and books are your friends at this point. Distract yourself as much as possible and like someone else said, ask for something for your nerves if you have to. Taking care of yourself now is as important as it is post-op.

Re: Stress
Before I had surgery I was so scared. Physically, I was too sick to do tons of housecleaning and stuff. Instead, I took care of paperwork. I updated all my insurance policies, updated my will, updated my medical stuff. I felt that if I died then my kids might have to clean up my stuff but all the papers would be in order.
The waiting was the worst part of the surgery. All the anxiety, fear and stress was hard on me. Even though there were surprises during my surgery there were no complications. I didn't feel so hot for a few days. Then I felt better. And now, I feel pretty good.
I know it is very scary, if your fear is overwhelming have your dr. give you something. Pretty much everyone gets scared before surgery, yet most likely everything will go fine.

Re: Stress
There are some nice relaxation tracks on itunes, ranging from affirmations to guided relaxation to subliminal tracks (my fave). I downloaded some plus some healing/surgery tracks as well and listened to them in the days before and even in the pre-op room. Might be worth a look.

Re: Stress
I know how you feel. My surgery is Monday, Feb. 6 and I'm literally sick at my stomach. I want to cry...I feel depressed but I know its just the not knowing about the surgery. I've ask all my friends and relatives for prayers because I know this is the only thing that will keep me sane....Good luck and prayers go your way....
