Can things get any worse?!?!
Have worked for the same company for 14 yrs.
When it comes to sick leave for surgery/illness thay will pay you depending on circumstances, years of service, prior history etc, etc.
A friend who works for the same company but different department had surgery for Endo, was off 6 weeks and was paid for the whole time.
So I just took it for granted I would be too. Surgery date is Dec 2nd.
My Manager (female)now informs me that I will not be paid for my time off as 7 yrs ago!! they paid me two extra weeks sick leave ( I had a miscarriage).
This Manager is new does not know me from Adam, and I am fuming mad.
Having surgery at Xmas is bad enough without the thought of having no extra money. What a lovely Christmas for my kids....
I have sent an email to Human Resources Manager and awaiting outcome. If it doesn't look good rest assured I'll be seeing my Chief Manager (male).
I only hope I don't break down in tears. Wahhhhhhhhhhhh

Sorry you are having trouble. You are going the right route for a resolution. If that does not work, go to the Human Rights Commission or the equivalent in the USA.
Good Luck

As a former PR Administrator, what in the heck does the above have to do with your situation today? Where is your Employee Handbook outlining what is and is not available through your company. Where is the Short Term Disability Book telling you what you are entitled to. Where is the HR Department that you can go to and over this persons head.
This situation sounds terribly wrong to me. Is this some tiny company with few employees? Even if they are, if they have a Short Term Disability Plan, they have to abide by it and your doctor's orders. If they inadvertently paid you extra 7 years ago, that has no bearing on today's circumstances. If you are insured with Short Term Disability with Unum, which is one of the largest disability carriers, call them directly and question them as to the coverage you have through this company.
Geez, I'd be going over someone's head with this one. Don't let this stand as is. This is totally wrong.

BJOzzie
I am from New Zealand so employee/employer conditions would be different.
Under NZ Dept of Labour Laws you are only entitled to 7 days sick leave per year max.
My employer is a corporate company with 2500 employees nationwide.
In their H/R Policy Manual it does actually state that in situations where a long period of absence is necessary due to personal illness or injury they will exercise discretion in regard to extended paid sick leave. I believe I have met that criteria.
I just feel my new Manager doesn't a) know this policy
or b) is being a #%#%$#^$%^
If you are off work more than 90 days you then recieve a disabilty benefit. 75% of income up until age 65 or when you are fit enough to return to work.
Heaven forbid I should ever fall into that category :-)
Sorry don't know how to do smilies.

Then go above her head and see if the policy still stands as she states. What would you have to lose in doing so? Think about it. After 14 yrs with the company, one would think they can do better than this. Are you sure there is no Short Term Disability Policy that they carry even though you are in NZ?
Hope it works out better for you. Here in the USA you would be entitled to 6 to 8 weeks disability with most companies. Getting paid though is dependent on many factors, such as the Policy they carry and the percentage and/or dollar amount they will pay per week for disability.
PS: To do smilies, click on the Smilies pic on the left of the screen you type into and they pop up in another window. You can then scroll down to that one you want and click on it. Where your cursor or end of sentence is, is where the appears, such as the one I just did and this one too . You can also learn the shorthand for the and put them in yourself such as (I typed in the format instead of click on the pic for this one), without going to the Smilies. You just need to remember the format for each one. Also, clicking on "Get More" in that box will pull up the entire window of Smilies that are available and you can close the window or minimize it to get back to your post after clicking on what you want.
Okay, enough of that - only 4 Smilies per post <grin>
