You might just be one of the lucky women who quickly adjusts and stops flashing... I was, I only had 2 months of flashes while on Lupron. By the way you can check your hormones by taking your basal body temperature in the morning. I was a thermometer addict before the surgery.

Susan --- Big congrats on your son coming home. Just know that that the excitement you see in your grandson with his Daddy coming home, is healing you that much more with every smile.

I think that I'm 18 days out and doing quite well. My DH has been incredible --- does everything for me...and cooks way too well. He's semi-retired so he is home full-time right now. Kids are now out of school, which is fine they are great. So, my whole family is home full time....doesn't get much better than that!

I'm still very puzzled about HRT though. I did have TAH/BSO and not on any HRT at this time. At my 2 week appt, the doc said that she would only put me on replacement if the hot flashes became unbearable. Since then, I've been wearing the Swelly Belly band (very nice!) and have not had any noticeable hot flashes. I'm 40 yr old. Hopefully, I will not have to go the HRT route...I guess?! Why is it that some docs immediately put Princesses on HRT and others do not? Is it just old school vs new practice and the benefits and/or risks of HRT are so debatable? I suppose I should take this discussion to the Horomone forum...but, I'm really curious to see how my syster-princesses feel about this since we had our hysterectomies within the same week.

Thanks so much for the information, it's so helpful to be informed. My bladder was also adhered so it was torn and needed stitches. I was NOT old that would make it a longer recovery period. I am having a very tough time of it. I was in agony from an enema on Memorial Day that my Dr. perscribed due to pain from constipation. Still no real BM to report and the pressure is extreme. I'm not going to eat tommorrow and will go back to my doctor Monday because RX stool softner isn't working either. 16 days without a BM is a little scary, not to mention painful. So sorry to hear your having a rough time of it also. Again thanks for the useful information. Hope your doing much better.

Hi,this forum has been very helpful although my previous posting was a reply to an earlier posting, didn't realize they'd show up under each other so sorry if some information is redundent.

I had a TAH on may 18th. I wish I could report a speedy recovery like some of the posts I've read, Yeah to those sisters, but for me it's almost 2 weeks post op and I'm still almost bedridden.

My doctor said I lost alot of blood, she also had to repair a tear in my bladder becaused it was adhered. I threw up for the whole first week, now I am having bowel problems. I'm in a lot of pain still with tremedous pressure. The bladder spasms have gotten better at least. I'm being to think I have an obstruction because rx stool softner is'nt even helping but the Dr. says I'd be doubled over. I know how important positive thinking is but it's tough to have that attitude when you feel like this. I'm trying to stop taking meds to see if that helps so of course the pain is worse and that makes it hard to sleep. Was able to keep one ovary, but between Lupron shot 2 months ago and depro previous to that ,the hot flashes don't help for sleeping.

Guess I'll watch TV or play solitare.

Mary (amts), I decided to keep my ovaries for their hormonal value., They reportedly often shut down within a short period after TAH, but I decided I MIGHT get a few more years before full blown menopause since family history suggests a late menopause.... we'll see.

I can say that there is a LOT of discussion about HRT benefits/risks/recommendations. Here's my 2 cents. My brother is an OB/GYN and I pummeled him with Q's until he begged me to quit asking so many questions! I did not completely follow his advice, (remove the ovaries, go on HRT), and after exhaustive mulling and waffling through options, I decided on conservation. (TAH was already a given since I had been bleeding for almost 6 months - even with the Lupron.) What I noticed from my VERY limited personal interaction with OB/GYNs (perhaps 4 or 5): the 'older' school (including my brother who is late 50s) seemed to be very nonchalant about 'just take the hormones until about age 51, then only if you really need them.' (51 being the average age for onset of menopause.) The younger the doctor, the more conservative the response about HRT. Don't know if the younger ones have less experience with severe menopausal symptoms or if their education covered more of the recent discoveries with HRT or ????

Termd, sorry to hear you are in such agony. I also read through the great progress some sisters are making and while I was overjoyed for them, I wanted it to be MY story! Considering what some have gone through, it's really a slippery slope to compare my recovery to anyone else. Your path for healing is the one YOU and YOUR BODY need to be on. Be assured that in my case, I had none of your complications and I'm just now barely getting around without pain meds. (Enough to participate in these forums, which is healing in itself!)

Like MorganLady said on the last page -- "little steps" are making a difference. Keep some little accomplishments tucked away to remind yourself of when you get discouraged.

You might consider asking your doctor for some more or stronger suggestions for getting those bowels moving. I myself, would not stop the pain meds -- I just read the latest Newsweek article on pain.

Thanks for the reassuring words. I asked my doctor if I should be doing better and she said basically the same thing, "listen to your body" so your right and I'll try to remember that. The only problem is if I listen to my body it tells me to go lay down. Monday I will ask for something stronger because I'm getting a little scared going this long without a BM. I know someone who died from an obstruction so that doesn't help either. Thanks for the soothing and calm thoughts, I'm sending them back your way to.

Termd - I am so sorry that you're having such trouble getting the BM's going. Sounds like your bowels haven't woken up properly yet. You definitely should call your doctor first thing in the morning. 16 days is too long to go without a BM. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you sweetie!

BTW, are you taking prescription pain meds still?

I asked my GYN about the "pulling" feeling, and she said that there are nerves that run from the hip area to the top of the pubic area, and they get pushed aside during the surgery, so they react afterwards. She said it is totally normal for them to take awhile to recover.

what 'pulling' feeling? I didn't have that.
