Hysterectomy bowel prep question
I'm scheduled for a da Vinci hysterectomy on Aug. 14 and I wonder if anyone can help me with a question about bowel prep. When I scheduled the surgery, the office manager made all of the arrangements and talked to me about bowel prep and other things. I have to drink 10 oz. of magnesium sulfate first thing in the morning the day before, follow a liquid diet all day, and then take an enema 2 hours before leaving for the hospital on the 14th. She then told me that I might not need the enema, and that I would know if I did or didn't. I asked her what that meant, that if everything coming out was clear that I didn't have to do it, and she was kind of vague about it. Of course, I'd rather not do it because I know it will be pretty sore down there, but I also don't want to screw up and not be able to have the surgery because I didn't do the enema. Does anyone know what she could mean by what she said? Thanks in advance for any help! I hope everyone out there is well!

Re: Hysterectomy bowel prep question
I had my Da Vinci on 7/31, only prep on mine was one enema before bed the night before surgery. If you are unsure, definitely ask your Dr, I did because I didn't feel that was enough prep.

Re: Hysterectomy bowel prep question
There are so many variations on bowel prep - from extensive two-day preps to none at all (like me); the only way to truly know is to call the office and ask. Ask to speak with a nurse; perhaps she will be more forthcoming with the information you need.

I also had to drink the magnesium citrate the day before and follow a liquid diet. I was concerned because I have had trouble getting down the bowel prep in the past, and she told me not to worry if I couldn't, it was just to compress the bowels and make her job easier but if I couldn't do it no big deal. I would definitely talk to the dr!

Re: Hysterectomy bowel prep question
Definitely talk to your doctor and get specific instructions. This is not something at which you should guess. Every doctor has different instructions, so it is hard to compare to everyone else.
I was on a liquid diet after lunch on the day before surgery, and I also had to drink 10 oz of magnesium citrate at 4 PM the afternoon before surgery. I did not have to do an enema.

Re: Hysterectomy bowel prep question
I had to so the bowel prep. I took 20 osmo prep laxatives and 8 Dulcolax. I was in the bathroom all day and it sucked. Drink lots and lots of liquids and stay close to the toilet.

Re: Hysterectomy bowel prep question
I appreciate what you've told me about your preps. Wow, that sounds horrible, Adelina! I think I've been dreading the bowel prep as much, if not more, than the hysterectomy. Thanks for all of your help!

Re: Hysterectomy bowel prep question
When I did my bowel prep the day before my surgery I was on a liquid diet all say up to midnight. I bought the magnesium citrate (cherry flavor is nasty). Try lemon..oh and mix it with something like lemon lime soda. Make sure it is extra cold and use a straw to drink it. This will help with the gagging. Oh and if you don't drink it all, it still works. I went so much that it was clear. Don't go far from the toilet that day. If an enema is required..it is only if you don't poop clear water.
Here is a tip from me..I ate a light diet 2 days before the liquid diet. Stay away from lots of cheese, heavy starches, or greasy foods that will slow down the progression of your bowels. Eat 2 cups of Activia yogurt each day before the bowel prep. Trust me your body will thank you for it. Oh and drink everything clear you can on bowel prep day..the anesthesiologist will thank you for it when they find a vien.
