I want to be educated - what are the alternatives?
Hi everyone! I am new here and I am scared. I went to my GP a few weeks ago because my period seems to be getting irregular and I thought maybe I was going into early menopause. I am 43. No pain with periods. Truthfully, I am not bleeding more, I am bleeding less. When my blood work showed no reason for the period irregularity, I was given an ultrasound on Tuesday.
Results showed 1 fibroid that is 10cm long. That's it. I don't have an OBGYN but will be meeting with one in a couple weeks. She has reviewed my ultrasound and said that the fibroid is pretty typical; no need to worry. But she recommends a total hysterectomy. No one in my family has had one. And I am freaking out the more I read online. What are the alternatives? Should I just do it?
I just got the news and am sitting at work crying. I don't have any children and don't plan to, but I sure think that's a jump to major surgery just to have surgery - especially since I don't have any symptoms. No pain, no extra bleeding.
I have come to accept that I won't have kids, but this is emotionally still very hard for me. I'm surprised how hard it is. And I'm scared! Is this really a good course of action for 1 Fibroid? Thoughts?

Re: I want to be educated - what are the alternatives?
Dear mhoff:
Most hysterectomies are done to improve quality of life, and it sounds like you don't have any symptoms that are affecting your day-to-day activities. Kudos to you for coming here to ask questions!!
I think you should meet with the OB/GYN as scheduled and opt to monitor the fibroid and your symptoms going forward (no hysterectomy at this time).
I hope you are able to find the right answers soon. I am sending huge cyberhugs

If no symptoms you could discuss watching and waiting with your doctor. My fibroid was about that size at your age but kept growing until it did cause issues and had to come out. Yours may never grow or cause issues and you may never need surgery, only time will tell.

You could get the fibroid embolized and it will stop growing. I was embolized at 51 for a 9cm fibroid and it has shrunk to virtually nothing. Very easy recovery.

I want to be educated - what are the alternatives?
I just got a hysterectomy July 27. I thought I had one fibroid that was causing the disruption but it ended up being multiple ones. I WAS having symptoms. Heavy periods and pain. Had I NOT had symptoms I would not have gotten the surgery.

I want to be educated - what are the alternatives?
I had 2 massive fibroids (cantaloupe and lemon sized) removed 5 years ago via a myomectomy. I was desperate to retain any fertility I had. No treatment guarantees you can still conceive though. I ended up having a hysterectomy 2 weeks ago because I just couldn't deal with the other symptoms and return of the fibroids. Best wishes to you, but keep an open mind. Sometimes the undesirable option is the best one.

Re: I want to be educated - what are the alternatives?
My thoughts: It's been 15 years today since I had my total hysterectomy. I do not recommend it. It has been a struggle to stay healthy and keep hormones balanced without having bigger issues develop. Our anatomical parts are there for a reason and must stay there to maintain optimal health. Current medical profession is focused on making money off of symptoms, not on optimal health. You must be your own health advocate and be proactive in educating yourself. You can get your health back. I am 57, 5 foot 6 tall, and weigh 120 lbs. I have to work at it, but am trying to make it fun. I see my Osteopath (primary) and my Gynecologist at least once a year. The only type of tests I agree to are Cologuard instead of Colonoscopy, and Thermal Body Scan instead of Mammography. I use only bioidentical hormone replacement, which I will be on for the rest of my life. I take 200mg Progesterone at night, Estrogen patch .0375 twice a week, and 2 clicks every morning of compounded Testosterone. I work out rebounding on a small trampoline, and weight train at home most days for about 25 minutes to my favorite music. Food is medicine: I stopped eating sugar 2 years ago after getting skin cancer 7 times. Sugar is food for cancer! I am a firm believer that sunscreen causes cancer. I was a swimmer for over 20 years and wore tons of it. Now I try to get at least 20 minutes of sun a day and I'm no longer vitamin D deficient. My immune system is strong. I also do not each Bread, pasta, most dairy, or processed food. It is a struggle but I'm feeling better and stronger everyday. Flax oil is important for cholesterol and AlgaeCal is working to keep me from getting Osteoporosis. I also take a few drops of Iodine in my water for breast health along with Selenium (very important to take them together). I have changed doctors more times than I can remember until I find someone that is focused on optimal health instead of symptoms of disease. Good luck on your health journey and I hope this doesn't get deleted and may help a few people. "Keep all your parts, they are important. Find alternatives to surgery at all cost!"
