Bowels at 3 weeks post hysterectomy

I’ll be 3 weeks post op on Wednesday. Had no issues but my bowels. TMI, but I have hard poop in the morning and loose stool every day around 2 for the last week. I’m afraid to leave my house. I have my follow up Wednesday and will ask then. Did anyone have this issue or should I worry?

I had a similar issue, I even had an issue because needing to pass gas and needing to poop felt the same. So I would go into the bathroom to pass gas just in case. It lasted about 4-5 weeks and then stopped and things went back to normal,

Try not to worry. Bowel disruptions and changed bowel habits are very common to hysterectomies as part of the healing process. Though many have constipation, some women experience loose stools.

You didn’t mention if you were taking any stool softeners, extra fiber, like Metamucil, or laxatives. On days that I have more than one bowel movement per day, the secondary is always softer than the first because it hasn’t had as much time for water to be absorbed as it moved through quicker. Stool that had sat over night has more time for water to be absorbed, creating a firmer stool. Despite internet search result warnings about alternating constipation and diarrhea being a sign of an ominous disease, at this time, you can expect disruptions from surgery and throughout the healing period, which last several weeks to months.

Since your follow up is in a few days, your doctor should be able to put your mind at rest. In the meantime, try to relax.

Please remember that this site is a no-embarrasment zone, where poop is a common topic of discussion, and you never need to worry about giving out too much information. For that first poop in the morning, I recommend starting your day by drinking a tall glass of water with the juice of half a lemon, followed by a breakfast high in soluble fiber from oatmeal, bananas, blueberries, and/or chia seeds, all of which work by softening your stools for easier passage. Increasing your intake of soluble fiber can also help with the loose BMs later in the day by absorbing excess water to produce a firmer poop. Happy pooping, and best wishes for continued health and healing!

Re: Bowels at 3 weeks post hysterectomy

and

I had to actively manage my bowels for 7-8 weeks. On days I didn't get enough water, I'd have mild constipation the next day or two. OTOH, not every woman gets constipation after surgery - some do get diarrhea. Often it's due a an imbalance of the gut flora. Adding a probiotic to your diet can help - Greek yogurt, kefir, Kombucha are easy add ins, and there are also supplements. While it might sound counterintuitive since you're having loose stools, keep drinking plenty of water, add fiber to your diet as suggested (fiber allows the stool to hold water).

The times I've had loose stools in my life which weren't diarrhea were after some kind of procedure where I had a liquid diet or colon prep. It takes a while for my bowels to get back to normal. After my most recent abdominal surgery the literature said it could take "a number of weeks" for my bowels to get back to normal. Yeah, it was about 4-5.

Since you've just joined us, you might find these resources helpful in knowing what to expect during these first weeks:I'd also like to invite you to connect with your Recovery Thread for women who had surgery the same week as you at Recovery Progress Reports for Apr 12-18. Recovery Threads are wonderful for getting support, comparing notes, encouraging others, and keeping one another company.

Bowels at 3 weeks post hysterectomy

Went to my post op today. He seemed kind of concerned about the diarrhea for a week and being 2 weeks out. I have taken Imodium a few times and it works at the time but then comes back the next day or 2. Did blood work abs everything is normal. He told me to take 2 Imodium at the next loose stool and then 1 after that for 2 days. So I took 2 at noon today after I had a slightly loose stool but not as bad as the day before, and I haven’t gone since. Belly has been gurgling but no BM. So now I’ll wait til Friday and he said to call my PCP and get in there if it’s not better for more tests. I have no other symptoms. So frustrating and embarrassing. I have to go get my hair colored tomorrow for 2 hours a d I’m nervous I will have to stop her to go to the bathroom....

You may want to try a good probiotic supplement in the meantime. If you had a prophylactic antibiotic during surgery, your gut flora may be off, which can cause loose stools. Just a thought.
