Worried about bowel prep and driving to hospital
I have surg on Wed. I live by myself- I have to start bowel prep- with miralax at 5pm the night before- Should I do this at my house? Or go ahead and spend the night at my mom's. I am worried I will be too tired/weak from the prep to drive myself- am I worrying too much???

Re: Worried about bowel prep and driving to hospital
You should be fine to drive there. But I hope you have someone planning on driving you home after the surgery.
Also, I would call your Doctor and ask if you can start the bowel prep around 1:00pm.
At my Doctor, the instruction sheet said 4:00, but they told me I could start earlier if I wanted to.

Re: Worried about bowel prep and driving to hospital
It's very natural to worry about every little thing before surgery. I drove myself the morning of my surgery after my bowel prep and had no issues with weakness. My doctor said to start my prep at 2 p.m. for a 7:30 a.m. procedure. I wish I would have started earlier as it took a while for mine to kick in and then didn't get to sleep until fairly late. I would follow your doctor's recommendation though. Anyway, best of luck with your surgery!!

Re: Worried about bowel prep and driving to hospital
Yes- I am going to stay with my mom post-op. My sister is going to borrow my car for awhile.
So I was planning on working til almost 5pm the day before surg- but sounds like I may need to leave earlier if I can/should start bowel prep earlier.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Be sure to ask your doc- they all have different recs- not sure they all do a bowel prep.

Re: Worried about bowel prep and driving to hospital
The bowel prep was almost harder than the surgery. If you are prone to nausea, ask for a prescription for nausea medicine to take about 30 min before you start. I have had 2 surgeries, so 2 bowel preps. The first time, I threw up the solution instead of it coming out of the other end.
One more thing. Don't save everything for the day before surgery. Like cleaning, laundry, shaving legs, washing hair....
Because you will be spending quite a bit of time in the bathroom. I was up until past midnight just trying to get everything done.

Re: Worried about bowel prep and driving to hospital
My nausea pills knock me out, I'm thinking that's not the best idea either.....
Good advise, not waiting last minute to shave legs wash hair, although pulling an all nighter isn't the worst idea, I mean it's not like I have anything to do the next day... Or 2.. Or 3....

Re: Worried about bowel prep and driving to hospital
I did my preps at 1pm and 7pm. I think it was in the middle of the night the last time I went. I also had to fast the entire day before surgery. I was still able to drive to the hospital - an hour away. I did a suprep mini bowel prep that was very fast acting. Before I got half of it down, I was in the potty and didn't emerge for 90 minutes! I wished I had a cushioned seat. I just took my second drink into the bathroom when it was time.
