Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 31-Jun 06,2021
Welcome, This is your Recovery Thread, where you’ll be able to share your progress and meet other sisters who are recovering along with you. This is a safe environment where you should feel comfortable to ask questions, voice your concerns or even vent your frustrations. Truly a place without judgement, only loving support by others sisters and knowing that you are not alone.
I have the privilege to walk alongside you in your healing journey as your caring sister. I will offer guidance, share my own experiences and tips, point you to others resources, and remind you that with time you will feel better. I am not a medical provider, so if at anytime you are overly concerned as you know your body best, please check in with your doctor.
Healing should be your main focus! This was major surgery and healing takes place both inside & outside. Don’t be surprised if you experience things both emotionally and physically in the weeks to come. This process is different for everyone, learned to be patient and listen to your own body is key to helping to heal.
So here is some sisterly advice:
• Follow your doctor’s orders/restrictions
• Time to lean on others for help, the priority is YOU
• Get plenty of rest (your sleep maybe intermittent so nap when you are tired)
• Drink lots of water, seriously lots! (you want to pee out the anesthesia drugs)
• Take your meds as directed (don’t be a warrior in pain)
• No lifting, pushing, pulling, or bending (ask for help)
• Walk a little each day as you are able (trips to bathroom might be your start)
I changed my life on 11/8/2018 when I had my own hysterectomy. After trying everything and many years of issues with Endometriosis, failed Ablation which left my uterus full of pockets of scar tissue and a diagnosis of Adenomyosis, I finally ended the cycle of my pain and heavy bleeding and opened a new chapter in my life, one with better quality. Personally, my own HysterSister recovery thread was a lifesaver! Knowing I was part of a group of sisters that knew exactly what I was going thru and offered suggestions/support was a true blessing in my healing journey. This is why I wanted to pay it forward, by volunteering to be here to help you. I am looking forward to hearing from all, when you are ready to post.
Use the when you first post and introduce yourself to the group, tell us alittle about who you are, where you are from and how you are doing.
Take Care

Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 31-Jun 06,2021
Hi I had my robotic assisted hysterectomy yesterday, June 1st.
Had to be there 5:30am and surgery was scheduled for 7:30. I met everyone on the surgery team, as I was very nervous.
Don’t remember being wheeled to recovery but was very achy when I woke up around 2pm and very sore. They had called my husband to say I was wake and would let him know when to pick me up.
First time walking to the bathroom was hard as I was a little unstable but the nurse helped me. I felt better than I thought but fell asleep again. When I woke up, the nurse gave me ginger ale and Graham crackers as I was starving.
They wheeled me to the car to meet my husband at 4:30onand then I became nauseous and vomited a little.
When I got home went straight to bed. The doctor prescribed pain medicine but didn’t take it. Woke up around 8:30 and had some soup. My nose keeps running and I don’t know why. Was the same this morning.
I’m trying to take it easy and walk a little every hour. Feel constipated and took a stool softener. Drinking lot of water and eating peaches and banana to help.
Hoping the nose running stops soon and also will be less constipated.
Will keep you posted!

Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 31-Jun 06,2021
I’m new to this group but so happy to be here and to be surrounded with other women going through this.
I had my hysterectomy yesterday, June 3rd. It was done laparoscopically and they removed the uterus, cervix and Fallopian tubes. I was able to keep both ovaries. They also excised some endo tissue that had grown since they last went in an excised endo tissue in October.
I was very nervous and don’t typically deal with anesthesia. I’m also terrified of pain. I’ve been surprised that the pain isn’t nearly as bad as I thought. I’ve been alternating Tylenol and Advil and taking the pain killer when needed. Heating pads and ice packs have also really helped. I think the anxiety is the worst part but my doctors were very understanding and also gave me anti anxiety medication to help me get through. I’ve been trying to get up and move around a bit every 2 hours, but it’s no more than 5 minutes. Lots of sleeping so far.
It’s only been one day but I’m so glad I made this decision. I’m only 32 with no kids so getting to this point was a bit of a struggle with doctors, but I know it was the right thing to do. I tried absolutely everything and went to three different hospitals, all with the same diagnoses. My endometriosis and adenomyosis was ruining my life; I’ve been out of work on medical leave since February because of the pain and excessive bleeding. Finally I decided I had enough and found a doctor willing to do a hysterectomy. It was difficult; I’m 32 with no kids and many doctors told me I was “too young” to have this kind of pain, or if I had kids it would go away. I’m glad I kept pushing. I’m really looking forward to having my life back from this debilitating disease. I feel lucky to be given this turning point.
I hope everyone else’s recovery is going smoothly!

Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 31-Jun 06,2021
Hello
I had my LVAH on 31st. I woke up from the anaesthetic not in a good way so spent the first night in ICU. I was in some pain at the time. Day 2 was spent moving from ICU to ward and put on different pain meds. Day 3 I had chronic wind pain which I was finally able to shift. I was mainly bed bound as not able to get up after the anaesthetic Day 4 I came home YEAH.
Sleeping was only comfortable on my back for the first 4 nights but can now tolerate sleeping on my side.
I had the LAVH due to having 8 fibroids that were causing me grief and I can now really feel the pressure in my stomach gone that I had not noticed before.
Today is Day 6 and to my joy first BM. The doctor has put me on tablets for next 6 weeks to help me out in this department.I also have had a 6 day course of injections to prevent blood clots which ends tomorrow. Feeling tired but OK.
Now on the road to recovery.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 31-Jun 06,2021
Welcome Healthy25 and FlakieBlakie, so glad that you checked in here after your surgery. We have a few more ladies that will have surgery over the next few days that will be included in this group. I hope others will join in and post soon so that we can all support each other during this recovery.
Healthy25: I hope that you are feeling better since your first few days home. Gas and constipation are 1st week issues, I hope your bowels have started to move and that these issues have eased up for you. Not sure where the “runny nose” came from? I am not aware that is a side effect to anesthesia.
FlakieBlakie: Glad your pain is manageable and that the combo of other the counter meds are working. Funny I learned the importance of using together as one is better for pain and the other is better for inflammation. Yes, Heat and Cold will be your friends during recovery, use which ever feels the best for you at the time. Listen to your body, sleep when tired, move when you feel restless. Kudos for you on being your own health advocate and pushing for surgery. I too suffered from years of Endo/Adeno I tried to hold on until menopause. But could not deal with the daily pain that brought me to my surgery in 2018. I woke from surgery in recovery at the hospital feeling better then before my surgery. I have had no regrets and loving my new quality of life.
Wishing you both and all the other ladies that had surgery this week the best. Check back in for additional ladies to post or if you want to ask questions, lend support or give us an update on how you are doing.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 31-Jun 06,2021
Hi
I had my laparoscopic hysterectomy on June 1st. After a couple of years of increasingly heavy periods and iron levels so low that my hair started falling out I made the decision to have my uterus, cervix and fallopian tubes removed. I had a 1.25lb/10cm fibroid and I'm done having children so I opted for the hysterectomy.
Leading up to the surgery I didn't realize how nervous I was feeling but I was more emotional than usual and crying at every commercial. I think this must be how my anxiety manifests itself. The day of the surgery I messaged my surgeon and asked him to call me because I was having second thoughts. While fertility wasn't an issue for me, I was concerned with the risks of losing function in my ovaries. I'm 44 and not prepared for menopause yet. After talking with my surgeon I felt better and decided to head to the hospital. He told me it's quite common for him to get a call the day before or day of the surgery.
I checked in at 11:30 for a 1pm surgery. I was concerned about having a catheter inserted during pre-op but that all happened when I was under. The prep was easy and there wasn't much to do besides to give a urine sample, get into my hospital gown and be nervous. At 1:00 I kissed my husband went into the operating room where there was about 7-8 people bustling around. The started hooking me up to things and within a few minutes told me I would start to feel sleepy as they injected something into my IV. My surgeon held my hand while I went to sleep and the next thing I remember was waking up in recovery a little after 3:00.
I was uncomfortable but not in agony. The recovery nurse started giving me morphine until I was comfortable. Then I was extremely comfortable! I remember asking her if I kept both ovaries and she said I did. Within 45 mins or so my nurse was there to push my bed into my hospital room as I had a 2 night stay. The first night was much easier than I thought. I was medicated pretty well and got up that night to go and brush my teeth and I was surprised at how easy it was to stand and walk. I kept my catheter in overnight.
The next day I woke up and they removed my catheter (2-3 seconds of very minor discomfort but not painful) and they explained to me that it would be important to monitor my bladder to make sure it was emptying. They told me not to drink too much water and that it would take 4-6 hours before I would be able to pee on my own. I was a bit nervous about this as I could see that it can be a complication so I was relieved when I started peeing on my own without issues in a couple of hours. They had me pee into a bowl and they would measure what I drank, what came out and then do an ultrasound on my bladder to make sure it had emptied. All was well.
I spent this day on tylenol, tramadol and a couple of small doses of morphine and again I was so surprised at how good I felt. I showered and went for a small walk this day and watched a ton of HGTV. One thing that I couldn't get out of my head was that my vagina felt normal, and possibly even a little too normal. I wondered if it was numb. It felt a little unnerving that I didn't really know what had happened down there while I was in surgery! I had my uterus and fibroid removed in a bag that was inserted and removed through my vagina. It felt strange to me that I didn't really know what happened after I went to sleep. Not to suggest there was anything concerning that went on at all, but it's just such a private and intimate part of your body and knowing that you were asleep and someone put you in stirrups is strange! And why couldn't I feel that there had been "activity" down there? It was just a very odd feeling. I wish I would have asked my doctor beforehand to explain more of that process I think.
I'm home now and recovery has been going well. I did develop a yeast infection yesterday which they prescribed an oral dose of fluconazole but other than that it's been pretty uneventful. I have 3 tiny holes on my tummy that have been superglued and my tummy is puffy, but it's mostly amazed me that we live in an age where a surgeon can do a hysterectomy and that it can feel so non-traumatic!
I'm so thankful to have found this site and I hope everyone is doing well!

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 31-Jun 06,2021
Welcome Alaskangrown glad you checked in here. I found that my anxiety before surgery was all around the fear of the unknown of what recovery would be like after. It is sad that our minds do this to us and it is good that in most cases it is easier than we could imagine. I asked my surgeon if I could have a local and be awake during surgery (I am a bit of a medical show junkie)! She laughed and said sorry no and I would not want to be awake. She described that I would be of course in stir ups and on a tipped table to assist in surgery to help move my organs out of the field of surgery. I could just imagine what a sight that would be. I guess being a sleep was a good idea to save me from embarrassment.
I am glad that you are doing better than expected, remember that this was major surgery and the recovery will be a process it will be a bit of a rollercoaster of up and downs in the weeks to come, but we are here to support and answer your questions.
Time to pamper yourself and focus on healing.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 31-Jun 06,2021
Welcome KALP, I was notified that you post got moved here, glad you were redirected to your Recovery Thread where others recovering the same week you are located.
First, I am so happy that you are home and doing better. OMG how scary to end up in ICU. I hope that the rest of your recovery is un-eventful and you sure started out with a bang. It is very common to end up with build-up gas until the anesthesia getting out of your system. As well as taking narcotics can bind you up and cause constipation so glad to hear you are on meds to help avoid issues.
To all the RT ladies here: I am wishing you well, I hope you are doing okay, check in when you can.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 31-Jun 06,2021
As we wait for more ladies to join us here. I wanted to share some additional helpful hints for the 1st week in recovery.
You will find that no topic is unsafe to not bring up in this RT as if you are struggling with it you know there are others that are going thru it too! So with that said I will dig in! Ah the dreaded wait for the 1st Bowel Movement!
How Long After Hysterectomy Before a Bowel Movement?
10 foods to Get Your Bowels Moving After Hysterectomy
Try to relax it will come. Stay the course of stool softeners, lots of fluids, eating healthy with fiber and getting up and moving around as you can. I also used a stool to prop my feet up in a squatting position it helps align your system so voiding is easier. In fact, it helped so much that my husband got me a squatty potty and I still used it to this day!! For gas, I found Gas-X was a life saver! Everyone is different and whatever you do don’t force it or go over kill and take laxatives. Diarrhea will dehydrate you and definitely is not at all what you are aiming for.
Shoulder/rib pain and feeling like a truck ran over you is most likely the anesthesia working its way out of your system. I suffered from “splinted breathing” which is sometimes common in abdominal surgeries. I could not take deep breaths without pain. Ice and heat packs helped.
Fatigue is a normal, your body is taking all its energy and focus on healing you, it really wipes you out. Important to Nap/rest when you are tired, no matter what time it is. Don’t fight it Your body needs it. Don’t be surprised if you have interment sleep for a while. The bodies hormonal system is in shock and takes a while to get back in balance. Weird sleep patterns are one of the many things that happens during this time. The best thing you can do is try to listening to what your body needs.
Also, helps to write down when you take meds, so you can track when next dose is due. I know I had a table with all my “stuff” lined up and a log of when I took it. it really helped as I was in a bit of a fog for the first week.
Sending you all healing hugs
