UK NHS - Hysterectomy / UFE Wait Times
Hi there,
I've recently experienced pelvic and back pain and an ultrasound has shown that I have an enlarged uterus studded with large intramural and subserosal fibroids, two of which are mango-sized (honestly, I'm not sure how they've not caused symptoms until now, but as they're at the back of the uterus I don't have an enlarged stomach).
I'm 36, gay and with precisely zero intention of childbearing, so as long as I can keep my ovaries (which looked fine on ultrasound) I'd have no problem with a hysterectomy. The alternative might be UFE but I'm not sure if the fibroids are too large, and honestly I'm just tempted to whisk the lot out and be done with it once and for all.
Do any UK-based folk know what NHS waiting times are like at the moment? I'm based in Manchester and don't have private insurance, but have the means to go private if necessary to avoid a long wait and increasing pain. I do have an urgent referral to gynae due to their size and rapid growth, but given the Covid situation and the fact that everything looked very benign on USS my GP warned that it may still be a while, and the letter I've received was very 'don't call us, we'll call you.'
I've booked a private consultation next week, but would prefer not to spend thousands if it's avoidable.
Would love to hear the experiences of others in similar situations with fibroids, and especially any queer women dealing wirth a troublesome uterus!
Cheers,

Re: UK NHS - Hysterectomy / UFE Wait Times
Hope your private consultation went well and you may have found that your private consultant was able to give you an idea of what your local NHS trusts wait-time is.
Mine told me that if I was staying on the NHS, he'd recommend UFE initially as it would have a shorter wait time - but that there was a strong likelihood I might still need a hysterectomy in the future because my fibroid is 15cm+ and as many of my symptoms were pressure-related, the UFE might not shrink it enough to solve them. Like you, mine are at the back of my uterus and it's only the last six months or so that I've really felt the bulk of them - and had occasional heavy bleeding and urge incontinence.
Even the private hysterectomy had a 4-6 week wait time rather than the 1-2 weeks pre-COVID. I chose to use the time to take Prostap to try to shrink my fibroid a little as it would only delay it by another month or so. My consultant said that it should almost double the likelihood of a bikini incision over a vertical one. I'm now booked in for 20 August.
Unless there's a cancellation, I got the impression that we were looking at 9-12 months out for NHS surgery although if you are 'urgent' that might not be as long. The estimates for costs that I've seen were between £6-10,000 for private treatment.
I'm not queer, I've got a decade on you and based in London but the rest is familiar ground!

Meant to add - and can't figure out to edit - that you if you Google for NHS Waiting Lists, there's a page that lets you list a procedure and location and see all the current waiting times. I can't drop the link in here but will give you some idea.
