Upcoming hysterectomy 7/29: Anxiety about surgery

Hi, everyone! I’m going for a laparoscopic hysterectomy on July 29th. I’m not that nervous about the recovery, but I’m very nervous about being put under. Are there any tips that I can use to ease my fears?
TIA

We all get a bit that way. They do it so fast you won't even know it.

You will see many professionals and have blood drawn, IV installed, this that...gets busy. Try to smile and enjoy all the attention, I guess is my advice. One step at a time.

The first time I had a surgery, the anesthesiologist just asked me about life and I never finished a sentence. This time I asked the time, they said 8:01 and the next thing I was knocked out! Fear wastes precious energy. Say a prayer and relax.

Black Widow, let me add (I was a life coach), fear is dismantled with information and knowledge. It's the unknown we fear, often. If you can walk through everything in your mind, you will be prepared.

Hi,

I just had my surgery on 7/8. I was anxious about that as well. You will meet with the anesthesiologist before the surgery, and let them know how you are feeling and your concerns. They gave me something to relax me before I went into the OR. They will be with you the whole time, monitoring you, making sure you are ok. They asked me to take some deep breaths while they were administering the anesthetic in my IV, the next thing I knew I was in recovery.

You've got this!

Upcoming hysterectomy 7/29: Anxiety about surgery

My hysterectomy was my first major surgery, and I think I was more scared about being put under than about the surgery itself, but from the moment I met the surgical nurse, and then the anesthesiologist, I knew that I was in good hands. And it really does seem instantaneous; for me, it seemed like one moment, I was connected to enough monitors that I could probably receive radio signals from Siberia, then I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, and then the next moment - actually 3 hours later - I was walking up in recovery. Activities that come highly recommended for calming your anxiety include online yoga classes, meditation, deep breathing exercises, and regular exercise like a daily walk to burn off all those stress hormones. Wishing you all the best for a successful surgery and a smooth recovery!

Once you're getting ready for surgery, and your anesthesiologist comes to talk to you, ask them about getting some Versed in your IV fluids before the surgery. It will calm your anxiety and help blend the time from your prep room to the OR together and help you relax. It really does help.

Hi BlackWidow328 to HysterSisters!

I am so glad you found this site.

Having surgery and being put under is scary. All of your fears, emotions, feelings and anxieties are completely normal. The doctors and nurses will take very good care of you, they will watch over you and monitor you very closely. Probably at no other time are you the center of such attention. In addition, everyone in the OR has gone through extra training and education just to be there.

You can tell the anesthesiologist that you are nervous and anxious. They can give you something to help you relax. In addition, they will contact you probably the day before and discuss the procedures and what will happen and when. Here is an article that may provide information:
Anesthesia | Can My Anesthesiologist Help with Pre-Op Anxiety?

Just know that you are not alone in any of this. We will be by your side throughout this process.

Had my surgery on 6/17/21. Tell your team that you are anxious and they will surely help you out. You will be asleep so fast when they are ready. Peace and love to you!

Upcoming hysterectomy 7/29: Anxiety about surgery

My only fear of surgery was being put under. I cried up until I was out. I wasnt worried about pain or recovery but having my body forced to fall asleep and how would it feel? Was terrifying!!! My dr knew i was terrified so maybe she didnt tell me when the “sleepy” was coming? Honestly i have no idea!!! I was walked to a surgery table, i laid down, a clear mask went over my mouth and nose and the next thing I remember was going pee then getting dressed and leaving. Either i dont remember the count down or them telling me its going to happen but maybe she didnt because
I was too scared. Anyway it was nothing!! It was just BAM im awake and done! Pretty amazing and it i ever need surgery again, now i know that its nothing to worry about. Seriously, i was absolutely terrified!

Thank you so much for your input, ladies! I’ve actually had two previous surgeries so I don’t know why I’m so scared. Maybe due to covid? Your stories have definitely helped me calm down a bit. Thank you!
