Upcoming hysterectomy 10/18: Indecisive About Keeping One Ovary

I just had a complete hysterectomy yesterday where my remaining ovary was taken out. I had the previous ovary and both tubes removed previously due to a cyst on my one ovary. At the time I kept the remaining ovary so as not to plunge into menopause. Turns out the menopausal symptoms came along (gradually at first then full force). I went on HRT prior to my hysterectomy as it had become that bad. In hindsight I would have had both removed earlier.

I assumed both ovaries would be removed but my OB said she would like to leave the right ovary so that I won’t begin menopause or need hormone therapy. My concern is the right ovary getting cysts later on or worse getting ovarian cancer down the line. There was a small fear when the cyst was discovered that it could have been ovarian cancer, however the blood work came back negative for cancer markers. My Aunt who is an RN and had a fully hysterectomy at 44 said she felt so much better after everything was out and with a small daily dose of Estrogen she avoided hormone issues. Any similar experiences that anyone can share? Thank you!

Good morning… I had my DRH on August 2 and chose to keep both ovaries after a lot of deliberation and research. My mother and grandmother both had total hysterectomy with both ovaries removed at my same age and had no trouble on HRT. The benefits of keeping ovaries for heart health and bone density were enough for me to keep my ovaries. My doctor did remove my Fallopian tubes and took a look at both ovaries during the surgery. We agreed she would remove ovaries if anything appeared abnormal. She did remove a benign cyst from one ovary but left ovaries. Best of luck on your decision as it is so personal. It looks like you’ve got a lot of good info here on the forum to guide with your choice. Let us know how you are doing!

I did the same as you, the surgeon recommended ovary and tube removal via LAVH but there is/was nothing wrong with my ovaries, hadn’t hit full menopause and from what I have read there are benefits to keeping them even post menopause as far as bone and heart health are concerned. What I hadn’t realised was that many ovarian cancers can start in the tubes but these could go and ovaries kept. We agreed he would try and do this with a TVH which he was able to do.

Really difficult decision to make and my final choice was made during the final discussion with the surgeon before surgery.
