Upcoming hysterectomy 10/18: Indecisive About Keeping One Ovary

I’m 42, I have an upcoming hysterectomy scheduled for Oct. 18th. Removing my uterus due to fibroids. Have a tennis ball sized cyst on my left ovary, so that along with my left ovary will be removed. I assumed both ovaries would be removed but my OB said she would like to leave the right ovary so that I won’t begin menopause or need hormone therapy. My concern is the right ovary getting cysts later on or worse getting ovarian cancer down the line. There was a small fear when the cyst was discovered that it could have been ovarian cancer, however the blood work came back negative for cancer markers. My Aunt who is an RN and had a fully hysterectomy at 44 said she felt so much better after everything was out and with a small daily dose of Estrogen she avoided hormone issues. Any similar experiences that anyone can share? Thank you!

I kept mine but removed the Fallopian tubes on my doctor’s reputation. He explained that ovarian cancer often starts there so removng them should help reduce the risk while keeping hormone benefit. However I had no history of cysts.

Re: Indecisive About Keeping One Ovary

Ovaries, or ovary is still important to the body, make sure you do research to understand what your body will miss if you decide to lose both.

Also do research on cysts, they are extremely common and most are benign.

70% of women experience cysts in their lifetime. It is very likely that if if you keep one ovary you could still get some, but the chances are that you won’t know as they typically come and go.

I kept my ovaries, I still get cysts, some ruptured and within 3 days it is a non issue.
No way I’d lose my ovaries because of cysts

Re: Indecisive About Keeping One Ovary

if your ovary is healthy, I would suggest keeping it. do a lot of research on surgical menopause and the effects of removing your ovaries. I would never let a dr. remove anything that is healthy (ovaries or cervix).

Hi verohenry - to HysterSisters!

I am so glad you found this site.

As your doctor stated, it makes sense to keep your healthy ovary. There can be health consequences for surgical menopause. Here are articles that may provide information:
25 Health Risks Related to Oophorectomy and Surgical Menopause
Should I Keep My Healthy Ovary?
Should I Keep My Ovaries if I Am Near Menopause?
Fallopian Tubes and Ovarian Cancer

I lost everything - no choice for me. For me surgical menopause was MISERABLE. I went to my GP at the time and said HELP! She put me on oral low dose estrogen. It did give me my life back, but if I could have, I would have kept both ovaries.

Discuss your concerns with your doctor and make the best decision for you.

I agree with the above! I kept both healthy ovaries at age 48 because my surgeon and I agreed that the benefits of their continued hormone production outweighed the risks; I did have my Fallopian tubes removed to lower my cancer risk, as mentioned by Dom Mel and in the above article. I've never had any personal experience with ovarian cysts, but as I understand from what other sisters have said, it is possible to remove them while still preserving the ovary. Each situation is different, so what was right for your aunt may not be what's right for you; I agree with the others that you need to do your research, and maybe even seek out alternative opinions, so you can arrive at your own decision. Wishing you all the best for whatever you decide!
