Question about anasthesia

I had a lap surgery and DNC last summer. I woke up after the procedure was done still on the OR table and still intabated. Needless to say, I was very paniced and of course could not speak. They knocked me out again and took the tube out. I am very worried now of having anasthesia wearing off beofe it should. Has anyone had the same experience? That had never happened to me before and I've had two previous abdominal surgeries (years ago). I wasn't sure if It was b/c I'm getting older or not enough of the sleepy juices were given to me.

Thanks,
Jamie

Question about anasthesia

That happened to me once - years ago, it was my first abdominal surgery for a ruptured cyst. I freaked out and tried to pull the tube out myself! They didn't put me back under, just took the tube out. I've had many other procedures since and haven't woken up like that again. Make sure you tell the anesthesiologist about that. In fact, tell everyone in the OR.

Question about anasthesia

Jamie, I have not had this happen to me but I wanted to stop by and give some support. I don't think it has anything to do with your age. They probably didn't give you enough medication. You will see your anestesiologist (sp) before your surgery; I would definately let him know how you feel about this. He will probably make sure to give you enough meds to keep you comfortable. Good luck to you!!

Question about anasthesia

Sure did! I had to have an emergency appendectomy 4 years ago during my last pregnancy. I very clearly remember waking up to this horribly bright light in my face, unable to speak, my head hurting, and a ton of people surrounding me - then my nurse saying, "she's awake, knock her back out now!' Afterwards my surgeon proceded to tell me that I woke up just as he was cutting my appendix off of my bowel. Lovely!! Now I have had 4 surgeries and that is the only one I have woken up during. Tell your doctor about what happened so they can be sure to watch that during this surgery. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Question about anasthesia

Thank you ladies for your replies and support. I ended up meeting with my doctor Friday afternoon because I had so many questions. I asked him about waking up, and he went through my chart to find out who the anasthesiologist was who was at my last surgery. He found the Dr.'s name and made me write down on paper "No Dr. C_ _". My gyn told me to bring that paper w/me the day of surgery and remind him that we didn't want that doctor again. He also had me write down that they made extra sure to exibate me before the woke me up. So, hopefully that will do the trick. I just wanted to thank you all again for all your encouragement...you guys rock!!!

Question about anasthesia

I would tell the Anesthesiologist your concerns and what happened to you so that it does not happen again. I have awoken in the OR before, but it was when they were moving me to my transport bed, but never with the tube in.

Good luck!
