Upcoming surgery -- info regarding vaginal hyst, please

There is a lot of varying information out there, so I was just wondering if those of you that have had TVH could maybe give me some guidelines as far as what you were told or what you experienced?

Hospital Stay - I'm seeing everything from 1-4 days. I know my own doctor said it won't be 1 day for me, but I guess I'm trying to decide if it really could be up to 4 days.

Recovery Time - I'm seeing a range of 3-8 weeks.

Driving Restrictions - I'm seeing a range of 1-6 weeks.

Thanks.

The hospital stay and recovery time depend on what needs to be done inside and out. If the surgeons need to make an abdominal incision that takes a longer hospital stay and recovery time.

I had a vaginal hyst with three small incisions that at worst itched a little as they healed. I was in the hospital one night...as long as you are able to go pee, walk and sometimes pass gas they will send you home. My doc told me I could drive once I stopped taking the pain meds. I still waited two weeks because you don't think you move much when you drive (auto transmission) but you do and my little jaunts out at two weeks proved that I should keep the driving to a minimum.

Remember to pamper the princess because the inside is still healing long after the outside! Best of luck and speedy recovery!

I had my TVH BSO with A & P repairs done 7 wks ago today. The 3 week mark was really the turning point for me. That's when I noticed that I was feeling better and needing less naps! I was released by my doc at 6 weeks to resume pre op activities.

As for hospital stay...My surgury was first thing in the morning and I was released the next morning. Like someone else said....pee, gas, and walk...if no other issues you will probably go home then also.

Driving restrictions: no driving the 1st week, as much as I wanted beyond as long as I was not on pain meds. I only took 4 of those and switched to ibuprofen on the 4th day post op.

We are all different in the way we heal and tolerate pain. One important thing to remember is not to compare your recovery with everyone elses....don't get discouraged if you don't heal as quickly or you are not able to do as much as soon as others.

I wish all you up and coming LIW all the best with your surgery and recovery! You'll be glad when you are through the waiting part! It's worse than the recovery!

I had a TVH, with A&P and perineal repair. I was sore but the only stitches I felt were the perineal ones. It was of "major importance" to me to keep the stools soft (thank you Colace!) so I didn't have to bear down!

My surgery was about 1PM and my insurance told my Dr to "start the clock" when I came out of surgery (or recovery) for 18 hours. However, when he came in to see me the next morning - he said he wasn't signing for me to be released until late afternoon or following dinner, as he thought I wasn't ready to go at 9:00AM, when he was in with me.

As for recovery - it varies so much from one sister to another. There were days I'd feel like i'd never had anything done -- and then - POW! Getting up, taking a shower and getting dressed was enough to send me back to bed! There are still days I'm really tired (at 3.5 months). They say it can be 6 months to 1 year before you are totally back to normal!

I was able to at 2 weeks to my doctor's local office (about 2 miles each way), but I wasn't in any hurry to be driving anywhere else. Somewhere I read or was told to stay off of major highways and out of heavy traffic, as it can pull inside more than you think. As already stated in a post - there is something about the way you sit or move when driving - even with automatic transmissions - that jars you inside.

The main thing is to see what your doctor tells you as only s/he will know what was done inside and how long you need in each of these areas.

Wishing you the best in your surgery and recovery - and remember to

Hi Sisters,
Thanks for all the info in this thread, I am off to the castle on Monday and I was also wondering about A&P repair pain. I had an episiotomy with my ds and I thought I was never gonna sit right again. OUCH! Is that pain similar to the episiotomy stitches? Weird, I am not as worried about my uterus going... i am just obsessed with how the other repair will be because I had such a bad time with the healing after I had ds. I am scared but I hope to have a good outcome as so many other sisters have! Best wishes to all! Thanks for listening.

Hi Shadow-
The A&P repair is all internal and that I didn't feel pain-wise, other than being muscle-type sore. There are a LOT of little stitches in there and you have to be careful lifting, but that is fairly standard with a hyster of any kind.

The perineal stitches are the episiotomy stitches you are talking about! However, I am not sure that everyone with A&P also have the perineal ones. It might just depend on how/if the doctor cuts you there. I just remember the next morning telling the nurse that my stitches were pulling and she said I didn't have any stitches outside that I could feel. I said "yes I do" as I too had had episiotomies after my dd and ds' births. She kept telling me I didn't have any external stitches, that mine were all INSIDE, and I thought 'lady, I KNOW what I am talking about and it hurts!' I think I should have just asked for an ice bag to put down there to help sooth the area! Anyway, once those stitches healed or actually once the swelling goes down - they didn't hurt as much. Just remember the stool softeners, prunes, whatever works for you!

Being nervous is normal - you will do fine. Take some time to pamper yourself before going and after you come home!
Also be sure to post and let us know how you are doing.
