If I keep my ovaries, will I still get PMS?

I am scheduled for a daVinci hysterectomy in January. I am 44, and will be keeping my ovaries (unless, of course, the doctor discovers some reason I shouldn't when he is performing the daVinci).

For the past 7 years I have taken Sarafem for PMDD. I monitor my cycle using my basal body temperature, and when it rises (signaling ovulation) I begin the medication, taking it for about 2 weeks until the next cycle begins). I do know that I can continue to monitor my cycle in this way post-hyster, since I will still be ovulating. Question is, will I still need to?

lattenut

I kept my ovaries when I had my TVH 5 1/2 years ago and they're still working. I never had PMDD but I did have PMS symptoms. Since my hysterectomy, my PMS symptoms have diminished greatly. Some months I have breast tenderness, cravings, and moodiness, but some months go by and I hardly notice anything.

It seems that it varies among us and my experience isn't necessarily the norm. Logically, the reality is that if you keep your ovaries, you will probably continue to have the same symptoms you had before surgery.

I hope everything goes well for you!

Re: If I keep my ovaries, will I still get PMS?

I had my hysterectomy a year ago and I find that sometimes I get breast tenderness, well almost every month and I also get some bloating. But, I got migraines with my periods, don't get those now. My mood swings are far less severe...basically, there are still some symptoms, but for me, luckily they have diminished greatly!

I get migraines, too. It's been 5 weeks since the TAH surgery, and I still get them. Did your migraines cease right away, or did it take time? My Dr thinks that I will probably cont' to get migraines since I'm still having them, but my hubby feels that my hormones have to even out before knowing for sure. Your take....

I kept my ovaries & I can tell when I ovulate & when it would be that time of the month my breasts get tender & I get my one pimple. I guess I could track it if I needed to. I never got pms.
