i have seen several people mention that their hyst will be their first surgery or their first time being put under a general. my hyst will be my 4th surgery in less than 3 years, but the other 3 had nothing to do with why i am having my hyst. it sounds like some of you have been through numerous procedures trying to avoid a hyst. my hyst will make 8 surgeries for me in my life so far----just curious what some of you have done?

What are you having your hyst for? Just curious. I had mine because of extensive endometriosis. I had a laparoscopy one year ago to diagnose it but the doctor did not remove any of the endo because he said it was too extensive. Instead he put me on birth control which only made my symptoms way worse, then Lupron injections which helped the pain somewhat but caused me to have horrible migraines. I was getting to the point of having to take painkillers (and I mean the heavy ones like lortabs and motrin combined) 2 weeks out of the month and then feeling nauseated and fatigued the rest of the month. Finally I had my hysterectomy a little over 2 weeks ago. It is too early to tell if it has made a difference but I can say I am not on any pain meds right now, which is refreshing! I really wanted to try another laparoscopy first to remove all the endo but my lousy insurance wouldn't cover me to see a specialist in the endo field who is comfortable with removing it from places like my appendix, bladder, intestines, and rectum. I really hope this works or I may end up shelling out cash to get another laparoscopy in the future anyway.

I hope your surgery goes well and that you are comfortable with your choice. Best of wishes!

I have had three procedures done in less than a year and my hyst will make four. I had to have two bladder scopes, one for dx(which was wrong) so went for second opinion and new uro did another one where he found that my problem with my bladder was because my uteris was laying on it putting pressure so off to gyno where he did a larparscope to dx my pain and to see how bad my uteris was on my bladder. Turned out I not only had uterin prolaspe but also bladder and rectum and I have a cyst and endo on the ovaries along with adhesions. All three they used a local. So when hyst is done I will have had around 8 in my life also.

adenoids removed in childhood, also ear tubes inserted.

kept out of the hospital until first child was born, under general anaethestic because things got a bit complicated.

Gall bladder surgery when he was less than 1 year old.

D&C following second child because placenta didn't come away fully. Then they found a "cyst" on the right ovary that turned out to be a fibroma (solid lump about the size of a tennis ball). More surgery.

Ovarian cautery in late 90s to stimulate ovulation. Didn't work.

D&C about 1 year after that because the endometrium was "too thick".

Still got menstrual probs and a mystery pain in the groin area.

Gynae offered laparascopy to check things out. In the meantime GP has found prolapse and cystocele. Going back to the gynae next week to see what my options are. Mom and gran both had hyst so I wouldn;t be surprised if I am the third generation ...

Is anyone keeping count?!

Hmm... Let's see if I can remember them all...

1993 Colonoscopy due to bloody bowel movements (lots of blood)
1994 Colonoscopy again while I was awake, OUCH!!!
1995 Surgery to remove big toenail on left foot
1996 Colonoscopy again to rule out diverticulitis
2000 Laparascopy & Colonoscopy to diagnose endo&rule out ulcerative colitis
2000 Laparascopic removal of Gallbladder (which was "glued" to all surrounding organs with adhesions)
2001 Tubal ligation
2001 Cystoscopy
2001 Cystoscopy with biopsy under General Anesthesia

Umm, I think that's all.

So, when I finally get my hyst-it will make 10, unless you want to count the fact that I had General Anesthesia to have 3 teeth removed in 2004, then it's 11.

Gosh, I knew it was a lot, but didn't realize until now how many procedures there had been! Sheesh!!

It seems all of my health issues are revolved around that general area! LOL!

I've had:
1986 - exploratory surgery and consequent removal of right ovary and tube due to a large endometrial cyst (vertical incision).
1987 - c-section under general antithesia (sp)
1997 - gall bladder removal
1998 - laparoscopy to "clean up" scar tissue (secondary infertility issue)
2001 - c-section
2003 - c-section
2003 - bladder repair due to injury to bladder while having the c-section
and my soon to be hysterectomy!!!
