Hi all I have my pre-op today. Who do I see at the hosp. Do they just go over things with me? I am schueled for operation on 6/27
I am scared. you would think I would be used to operations by now. I had 3 c-sections tubes tied on the last. Had my colon removed 7 years ago due to UC. I just hate hosp. and pain. They say there is a 80% there is no cancer still afraid it is. My father died of colon cancer. I know its not the same. Have to do bowel prep on sunday. DOes that mean I shouldn't eat anything all day. or just after I start drinking that stuff? My doctor told me I would be house bound for 2 weeks. Is that so? WHat about after that?

thanks for all your help

Hi Donna,

You sound scared. I don't blame you, I was extremely freaked out a few months ago. I know you've read this before, but the waiting is truely the hardest part. My imagination ran wild with me. So, just try to breathe, think positive and have faith.

Do you go see your doctor for the preop? If so, he will explain a lot of things to you. Ask all your questions. Make a list, it does help. At the hospital, I had to have some tests done. Blood test, urine test, chest xray and EKG. The last two tests because I'm 35.

I had to do a bowel prep before surgery too. I was told not to eat anything but liquids after 5 pm and nothing at all after midnight. I had to do the Fleet kit 2 bowel prep. Drink some very, very salty liquid at 5, then 4 little pills at 7. Trust me, by morning I was completely cleaned out. The doctor should explain all of this at your pre-op appt.

Every doctor is different. They give different instructions. I wasn't housebound for 2 weeks. I could drive after two weeks. Just make sure you ask your doctor today at your pre-op.

(((Donna))),

Your pre-op is a chance for them to assess your physical condition and for you to get all your questions answered. Each hospital and each Dr is different, and then when you add in that each patient is different......well, your pre-op is not likely to be just like mine.

Your Dr likely ordered some tests to be done. This may be just some blood testing or it could include other tests like a chest x-ray if you have not had one done recently.

If you have any fears or questions about ANYTHING concerning your surgery, ask while you are there for pre-op. I had concerns about anesthesia and my asthma, and they sent for an anesthesiologist to come down and talk with me!

Make a list of your questions before you go, you will be nervous and might forget what you wanted to know.

My Dr didn't order a bowel prep for me, so I can't answer that one.

I was house bound for 2 weeks. After that, your Dr will let you know what you can do based on your personal recovery. Be sure and listen to him, so you will heal as quickly as possible. Read through the pre-op hints on the pull down menu at the top of this page. There is a ton of info there that can help make the whole process easier for you.

Good luck at your pre-op today, and if you need us when you get back, we will be here!
