Upcoming hysterectomy 4/5: Can I run a 10Km 7 weeks after surgery?

Hello,

I signed up to run a 10km before I knew about the surgery.

Surgery date is April 5, run date is May 25 -- what's the likelihood that I can do this? I don't care about my time at this point, I just want to do it.

I am able to downgrade to 5 or 2km, but I want to keep the 10km as I've been working hard the past years to get to that goal. I was so stoked to do it, and now this.

It'll be roughly two-months post-op.... so ...is this feasible, you think?

Thanks!

It's not impossible, but I wouldn't count on it. You really won't know for sure until closer to the time-of. What's the latest you can make a decision as to whether to stick to the 10km vs downgrading?

If you don’t care about your time, you could try and change to a walk if it’s too much. If you walk as much as you can and try a little slow running as soon as your dr clears you, it might help.im not a runner, but I love to walk a lot and did it throughout my recovery. I had no issues getting back to my workout routine as soon as I was cleared at 6 weeks, I just lowered the intensity and worked my way back up.

Re: Can I run a 10Km 7 weeks after surgery?

I would keep it scheduled. But remember that after surgery you shouldn’t immediately start building back up to a 10k. At first you will be happy to have walked around the hospital floor. But if your recovery is like mine - I got up to 80% well very quickly.

I’m 9 weeks post op now and I probably wouldn’t be ready to run a 10k and make my best-ever time. But I could run it if my goal was just to finish it.

Readjust your expectations for that race and you will probably be okay to participate in it.

That's a good point. 10km's about six miles, yeah? I was walking six miles a day at four weeks, having worked my way (very gradually) up from walking a lap around the hospital ward the morning after surgery.
