Preparing for pre-op?

I haven't gotten a date for my surgery just yet, but was told it could be as early as next Friday. What are preperation that have to be made to start preparing for surgery, and what can I expect in the weeks to come leading up to my surgery if it takes longer then next Friday? I am scared, relieved to know what happened can be fixed, and stressed to the point of crying at the sight of a pregnant woman. I have 2 children, but always assumed I would have the option for more later in life. I am 24 and truelly have no idea what to expect. I keep hoping this problem "prolapsed uterus" will correct itself with no surgery, but I'm not sure that could happen. I just need help understanding what my body is going to go through in the days/weeks before the surgery, and what to expect after. Thank You

Re: Preparing for pre-op?

Bless your heart- I just had my surgery 3 weeks ago- and I was crying pretty hard as I was wheeled into the o.r.- everything was waay better than I expected- I was terrified- I had very little pain- and 3 weeks later I feel a bit more like me- the hot flashes are just beginning but they are not awful- I have been pretty happy- Dr. said yesterday I should be crabby by now! You will do great- just remember to take it easy- dont sit up or lay down flat on your back- turn on your side and get up udsing your arm and elbow to put less pressure on tummy. 2 kids is a blessing- you are young and vibrant and will bounce back in no time- get hubby and kids on board to help and be sensitive to your needs- drink water- take gas-x to the hospital- I asked my Dr. and he said

Re: Preparing for pre-op?

Hi Tawnie2, and

Most of us have a lot of questions, fears, and crying as we prepare for hysterectomy. It's a big deal, and it's hard to know what to prepare for physically and emotionally. I found the HysterSisters Pre-Op Resources page to be incredibly helpful. You'll find articles to help you prepare, questions to ask your doctor, hints on talking to your family, and more. You can also sign up for the hysterectomy checkpoints.

You've found a wonderful group of women who will share their experiences with you as you move through this journey. We'll be right here with you to help you along your way.

Keep us updated, and I'm sending big your way.

Re: Preparing for pre-op?

Tawnie22,

First of all I am sending you hugs. Your mind and body are going through a lot right now.

The best adives that I can give you is to go through this site. There are so many things here that will help.

Talk to your Dr. . Be open with him/her with your concerns.

I don't know what kind of surgery you are having but get as much info as possible.

Talk to your DH. Get your support system set up at home.

If you are like most of us you will have to deal with every emotion in the book before your surgery. We are here to help. I was excited for my surgery and still had them all.

Make sure you have the items you want and need to take to the castle ( there is a list here that may help), and make sure you have a recovery area ready to go. Clear it with Doc first but I recomend Gas X and Dulcolax. Trust me you will need them.

I also recomend Ice packs like the ones in the store here. I am not one to use them as heat helps me more than cold but I would have been lost without it.

I hope this helps.
