Re: HysterectomiyViewed as *Minor* Surgery?

I get the insurance companies trying to maximize their profits by minimizing our comfort and (sometimes) care. What bothers me more is the question, "But, didn't you CHOOSE to do this?" Like it's on the same as cosmetic surgery. I have heard this from men and women. My response now is "Yes, I CHOSE major surgery over being in agonizing, debilitating pain every single month."

I do have to say I'm very fortunate to work for two women who've been through it!! I plan on being out of work a full three weeks, then chaining myself to my desk as much as possible. They understand and support that.

Re: HysterectomiyViewed as *Minor* Surgery?

i had a good amount of pain in the recovery room, but once I got a booster of meds I was much better. I was glad to be in overnight (my doctor does this routinely) though, just so there would be help if needed. I was expecting pain with any movement like my c-sections many years before but the meds worked well and I could boost myself up in bed and almost sleep on my side without pain. The next morning my IV was removed, the catheter was removed and I was ready to go home. In my case there was really no reason for me to stay any longer. i did a lot of resting at home, but I didn't have any difficulties or need anything more than otc pain meds at all. So I guess I'm an example of why this surgery is being minimized by some insurance companies and some doctors. I've also read that the davinci robot is able to perform the hysterectomy with much less jostling compared to a human hand holding surgical tools. I'm very glad it was available to me, and I'm thankful that my experience was good. Now about those hot flashes that came back. . .

Re: HysterectomiyViewed as *Minor* Surgery?

Hi! I was told I would only be in the hospital 24 hours afterwards. I think the nurse said it's considered extended outpatient surgery? This doesn't seem like a minor surgery to me though. I had my gallbladder removed in 2010 and that seemed minor compared to this.

Re: Hysterectomy Viewed as *Minor* Surgery?

I had SAH and insurance automatically approved 2 nights stay with ability to extend if necessary. Job's short term disability pays me 100% for up to 24 weeks and 60% after. I am going back in 4 - 6 weeks depending on how I'm doing. The hospital considers this "short stay." It seems I am blessed with my insurance and job. I had my SAH 7/9 at 9:15 a.m. I am still here in hospital, still with pain pump, still with IV, have not passed gas, and nurses said I stay until I do. Been walking the halls trying to make it happen...

I do believe, however, that insurance companies do whatever they can to pay the lowest bill. I guess since they've paid over $68k for me this year alone that they're hoping (as we all are) that this last surgery will be the end of many woes I've been having.
