compare to c section
I was wondering if anyone has had a c section and TAH and how do they compare as far as recovery and pain. I had a c section and it was not that bad except for dealing with the newborn on top of that!

Re: compare to c section
No comparison. The sugeries are totally different. C-sections are about 30 minutes - incision, pull baby, sutures. TAH - incision, tie of blood supplies, ligaments, cut remove structures, resupport structures remaining (I'm told 100s of stitches to do the internal work) and about 3 hours worth of surgery. My sugeon was actually offended when I asked her the same question - she said don't even try and compare it to the 2 c-sections I previously had. She was right - it was much more difficult - more pain, longer recovery. You get through it, but don't expect to be up doing laundry the next week (like I did after both my c-sections). 6-8 weeks before you can really get out and about, but a full year before you are yourself again. You will feel better though as each week passes. I judged myself against the week before for about 12 weeks, now it's a monthly thing. Except for a seperate problem, I feel pretty good now. Be patient and take time to heal!!

Re: compare to c section
It will be different, but how you recover and feel will be up to you! I know I will have a smooth recovery because that's what I want. Not everybody is the same. No, you can't compare the two but It also has alot to do on how you are as a person. Keep a positive mind and you will be just fine! You will be on your feet in no time and feeling better then ever! Another reason why a C-section doesn't seem as bad is because when you do have a newborn, you have other things to think about, the same goes with this surgery. If you find something to keep your mind off of the pain and what happened it will help to move on from it and begin your new healthy life! Keep The Mind Busy!! I know there are also complications that we cannot control which makes recovery time extended but keeping your head up helps!:~) Hope this helps!!!! HUGS!!!!

Re: compare to c section
Hi suesy
On our Pre-op Resources page, the first article listed addresses this exact issue.
Although my hysterectomy was done vaginally, I still found the hysterectomy more difficult than the c-section I had. Some women, though, do find the hysterectomy a bit easier than a c-section, and maybe you'll be one of them!

Re: compare to c section
I have had 4 c-sections. I had a RALH on 10/15 and it was way better than the c-sections as far as pain. I was expecting the same pain, but only had pain in the upper abdomen area and some "pressure" like pain where my uterus had been. Dr said is was where my bladder had been messed with during surgery.
I mentioned to my dr that I would not have a baby as a consolation prize; she said the consolation prize is no more periods!
Good luck with your surgery and be well!!! You will feel so much better in a few weeks.

Re: compare to c section
It is dif. from the C-section in that they cut you dif. My doctor explained that w/C-section just one cut, TAH you have the C-section incision cut, then they cut through the muscles to do little damage (easier then C-section after 1 wk) then through the fat (vs versa sorry). Anyways yes it is dif but not horrible. The 1st 1 - 2 will be rough but it was w/C-section. Then you will just be really tired and this time you can really just sleep, no baby to wake you. I will tell you I found it to be a new day a new pain (but not a horrible one, just more annoying pains). You will be fine. Good luck and keep us posted. Relax. The wait before really is the hardest part.

Re: compare to c section
I hope this technique works for you. I would keep in mind that pain is not a matter of attitude, sometimes its a matter of the injury and repair you undergo. Don't be upset if it is rougher than you expect, it is not something you can talk yourself out of or past. Yes, be postive, but allow yourself to feel all your emotions so that you can heal emotionally and physically.

Re: compare to c section
I'm with Sharpie, she said exactly what I would have said. Definitely worse than either of my c-sections. It's tolerable and you'll get through it but I am at two weeks today and am nowhere near where I was after my c-section. It just takes time and if you know that in advance I think it helps.
Good luck & take care.

Re: compare to c section
My technique worked great for Me as I knew it would. My surgery is done and my recovery is going smooth. I have tons of energy! I feel like a brand new person. It went even better then I thought it would. Way better recovery then the c-section in my opinion. My bladder was attatched to my uterus, but it still isn't as bad. I have had more then one surgery, repairs and all, and I would have to say that keeping a healthy mind and spirits high helps the healing process tremendously. I guess we are all different on how we get around pain.
