last period before hysterectomy on 12/29
I just ended my last period for the rest of my life. I do not know how to feel. Happy or sad. And my scheduled LAVH is in exactly two weeks. I don't know how to feel about that either. My uterus is slightly bigger than a normal uterus and my dr said he might be able to do a LAVH if not he will do the abdominal one. I'm so nervous and scared. I don't know what to expect.

Re: last period
My doctor told me the same thing. It was quite worrisome not knowing ahead of time but ended up LAVH despite his concerns. Hopefully yours will be the same, I really feel that doctors try hard to not have to do TAH if possible so that helps.
Try to feel happy, as much as you can when facing any medical procedure. But keep in mind that You are taking a major step toward improving your help and more than likely leaving behind some years of pain, discomfort and worry.
Hope all goes well for you in 2 weeks! Keep us posted!

Re: last period before hysterectomy on 12/29
If I wasn't already in a lot of pain, I would have tap danced this morning when I woke up with my last period ever! I'm almost 43 and I've been having periods since I was 10 1/2.
I've made my peace with the upcoming surgery and I'm so looking forward to not having this pain rule my life anymore after I'm recovered.
Yes, it's bittersweet in a way. About as bittersweet as saying goodbye to a school bully!
Rejoice Hystersister! Your long road of pain and suffering is nearly at it's end!

Halfway through my last period. It was 17 days late. If it had come on time, I'd still have had another one to go. Thank you, broken uterus!

ssanders -
You mix of emotions, and the emotional , is very normal. Pondering your last period can be difficult. There is such finality to this surgery, and it can be so unsettling.
The unknowns are always scary . Recovery is different for everyone, but this is MAJOR SURGRY. Think in terms of weeks and not days. You will be VERY TIRED for a few weeks. You will also need help with cooking, cleaning, dishes, laundry, shopping, driving, etc. You will need to take time off work - how long depends on how fast you heal and what your job entails. Again, think weeks and not days. You will be doing lots of walking - brief but frequent walks. And you will rest much, but you will not be bed ridden. As you heal you will slowly move back into your life.
You may want to look at the check point videos on our post-op page. They will give you a good idea.
Above all, know that you are not alone. We are here for you.

I went in to surgery during my period. Woke without. It was strange to think I'd never have one again but I'm 9 months post op and have never missed it! No sad feelings or remorse. You will eventually feel relief. ;-)

Re: last period before hysterectomy on 12/29
Ssanders, be happy. My surgery isn't until January 16th but I'm ECSTATIC to never have to buy super plus tampons and maxi pads ever again. I won't have to worry about getting up from my desk at work and realizing that I've leaked on my chair. I'll never need to feel the discomfort of traveling home wearing 3 tampons plus a maxi pad and STILL worry that I won't make it all the way home without having an accident. No more mood swings at the onset of my period and horrible cramps for the first 48 hours. I'm ready to end the chapter and close the book on this one. New life....here I come!

Our surgery is scheduled for the same day. I am hoping I have a period before surgery and not on that day. Good luck to you.

Re: last period before hysterectomy on 12/29
I started my last period ever today. I've been having extreme cramping on and off the week prior. I actually called my dr thinking I had a kidney infection or something. My stomach was distended and I looked like I was approx 5 months pregnant. I'm a full week early. I didn't expect this period. This pain is awful. Each month it just gets worse. This is a great reminder of what life is like with my uterus and that were I to keep it it will only get worse. I lived for so many years with debilitating Endo pain and then had this lovely remission for many years. Now it appears things are coming back with a vengeance. I can't wait for my surgery date at this point.
