Upcoming Feb Hysterectomy & BSO, with major endometriosis excision ... hospital stay?

Hi everyone! 38 years old. New here. My surgery will be the 1st or 2nd week of Feb. Just waiting on my new insurance to take effect! While I wait, I have a question.

So I know a lot of ppl get their hysterectomies as outpatient procedures. I am trying to figure out what to expect from mine. I am having a radical hysterectomy, an appendectomy, and extensive endometrial excision from my bowels, kidneys, and most notably, my ureters (one of which is currently stented due to nearly causing kidney failure thanks to being blocked by endo). He said there is a high likelihood my ureter will need to be re-sectioned, and my bowels might, too. He is using a DaVinci robot and laparoscopy to do the excision and my cervix/uterus/ovaries will be removed vaginally. He said the surgery would not be easy breezy and that it could take awhile.

So...Has anyone else on here had a more involved hysterectomy/excision like mine is supposed to be? Should I expect to spend a night in the hospital or will they kick me out? My mother is coming in to take care of me, but I kind of wish that first night could be in the hospital--especially since the place I am going for my surgery is 4 hours from home. I was hoping to find some folks with situations similar to mine!

Thank you all. It's nice to be here.

Re: Hysterectomy/bilat oophorectomy with major endometriosis excision...hospital stay?

Outpatient is up to 23 hours, so it can include a night.

They would only discharge you when you’re able to use the bathroom and obviously no other issues

Re: Hysterectomy/bilat oophorectomy with major endometriosis excision...hospital stay?

I'm not having quite as extensive a surgery, but I do have enormous fibroids filling my entire abdomen. I'll have a robot-assisted surgery with a small bikini cut for removal. One of my fibroids is 11cm and attached to my cervix so it makes it more complicated for getting around my ureters. I've also had previous abdominal surgery so I worry about scar tissue being worse than expected or other issues with the fibroids being attached to things. My surgeon has planned this as outpatient but I, too, am a bit worried about this. Like GPMS said, though, they won't send us home if it's not safe. I plan to speak with my doctor about my concerns just so she knows of my worried beforehand. I think because you have such a long trip home it's worth mentioning to your doctor as well! Everything out there says going home sooner (as long as it's medically indicated) is better for us in the long run, so I definitely want to balance the cost/benefits of staying longer.

My surgery is February 2 - Good luck!!

Re: Upcoming Feb Hysterectomy & BSO, with major endometriosis excision ... hospital stay?

Talk to your doctor about your hospital stay. It sounds like with multiple issues, you might stay longer. But see what he thinks. It might also depend on how you feel after surgery and if you look well enough to manage at home or not.

Best wishes!

Hi BlueKentuckyGir to HysterSisters -

I am so glad you found this site.

You are having quite a bit done, and your surgery will take time. Technically, though "outpatient" is release within 23 hours. But, your doctor will not release you until he is confident you are ready to go home.

Talk to your doctor about how long he thinks you will be in the hospital. Here are articles that may provide information:

Hospital Stay? How Long after Hysterectomy?

I had a total abdominal hysterectomy with both tubes and ovaries removed (TAH BSO), with a 6-inch vertical incision. My doctor told me that my hospital stay would be 3 to 5 days. I was in for 3 1/2 days.

Here also is some information on general hysterectomy terms and types:
