Which Gas is Which after Hysterectomy? CO2 or Digestive?

When people say they have terrible gas pains that shoot into legs and shoulders - is that digestive gas or the CO2 gas? My doc days he is really good about getting the CO2 gas out and I shouldn't worry much about it (and that no meds would help with that). He said Gas X for the digestive gas. Wondering which one all the reported pain comes from.

Oh god. This is getting too real now...terrified.

Re: Which Gas is Which?

CO2 usually affects the diaphragm which refers the pain to the shoulders. Some people report pain in their legs as well. The only treatment is lying flat and waiting it out.

Re: Which Gas is Which?

When I had my lap last month I never had an ounce of the horrid gas pain everyone talks of. I keep my feet elevated on pillows higher than my chest so the excess would not go to my shoulders. Not sure if my doc was really just 'that good' at getting the gas out or what. I plan to do the same for my hyst next week

Re: Which Gas is Which?

I had little or no gas pains - of any kind. Very slight ache in my right shoulder while in the hospital, but if I wasn't looking for it, I might not have even noticed it. I took Gas-X to the hospital, but I didn't really need it. I was given broth, jello, juice, and a popsicle for supper and ate every bite! Sucked on tictacs on and off afterward, just to keep my mouth moist. I also drank a lot of water... so much in fact that they took out my IV early because I was getting bloated!
Wishing you all the best!

Re: Which Gas is Which?

I had the absolute worse gas pains in my right shoulder. I was given stool softeners for 3 nights in the hospital & suppositories. I also tried prune juice. I also did a lot of walking in the hospital.

Re: Which Gas is Which?

I had HORRIBLE pains in my chest and left back an shoulder area after my tubal last year.. And nothing helped. .I hurt for 5 days..The pain from the gas hurt worse than the actual surgery pain...They say walking, coughing and burping helps but I didn't find anything to help. .Walking hurt! But everyone is different..I have my surgery on the 24th and the gas pains are my main concern at the moment...Good luck to you and I pray your doc can get all the gas out!

Re: Which Gas is Which?

It is the C02 gas they are referring to. Mine disappeared in about 3 days. The gas x has no real affect on it but resting with your feet elevated helps a bit. And what helped the most is the pain meds they send you home with. That is what helped me.
